Once upon a time, I bought a bodybuilding magazine, in the magazine there was a story about Larry Scott, the first Mr. Olympia.
Reading his interview, he mentioned a certain Lou Degney as his first trainer and the owner of the gym that Larry first went to. As it turned out later, Lou Degni was a famous actor under the pseudonym Mark Forest, the same one who played Maciste, Hercules and Goliath in historical adventure films. Mark Forest was born on January 6, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York, USA, to Lorenzo Louis Degni. Third generation Italian-Americans.
Tall, handsome, physically fit, he was an actor, known for films of the sword and sandal genre. With the money he earned making films about gladiators in Italy, he studied opera. He was the second American actor/bodybuilder, after Steve Reeves, to be recruited by Italian producers to star in swords and sandals films. In the late 1950s, he and Joe Mowry participated in a nightclub performance with burlesque queen Lily Christine.

This list does not include all documentaries and feature films that reveal the essence and character, demonstrating the strength, endurance and ability to cope with the problems of athletes. Pictures about the ascent to heights, about the training of bodybuilders, about the trials and hardships that befell them in life, show the physical and moral capabilities of a person, demonstrate the right approach to achieving a goal. Dramas about everyday and family troubles put athletes on the level of simple people who are understandable to everyone. The art of showing the art and at the same time the life of bodybuilders is serious work. The same as the work of the bodybuilders themselves.
Movie
His handsome face and impressive form landed him on the cover of a small publication called Men and Art, and he later opened a gym on Long Island. Luckily, a film agent saw his photo and invited him to Hollywood to audition for the role of Tarzan. Having failed the screen test for the role of Tarzan, he was included in the epic historical blockbuster “The Egyptian” (1954), but American cinema does not pay much attention to him.
Although he didn't get the role, the young bodybuilder eventually found work with Mae West's troupe. Joins the eccentric actress's "muscle" troupe and performs a show of strength in Las Vegas nightclubs.
He also found time to compete in several bodybuilding competitions, including Mr. Muscle Beach, which he won in the next five years.
Steve Reeves had achieved huge success with Hercules in 1959, and filmmakers were actively looking for muscle-bound opponents. After a quick audition, he was signed to a three-picture contract almost on the spot. He soon found himself on his way to Italy, where he starred with Broderick Crawford in the film Goliath and the Dragon. Along the way, he changed his name to something that has since brought him great fame: Mark Forest.
Other interpretations of the main character follow, this time as Maciste, and in 1964, at the peak of his popularity, he appeared in six films in just eight months. 1965 marks the beginning of the end of this genre, which only caught fire with audiences in its early years. Kindar - Unbreakable (1965) was his last film. He returned to the United States, but instead of pursuing an acting career, he decided to devote himself to singing and classical opera. Forest was the second American actor hired by Italian producers to make gladiatorial films, and his natural grace and ease in front of the cameras made him a popular star with directors and fans alike. The handsome, crazy actor made a dozen films in Italy and reportedly had a good time.
Mark played in 12 films:
- Kindar the Invulnerable (1965)
- The Magnificent Gladiator (1964)
- Children of the Sun (1964)
- Lion of Egypt (1964)
- In Genghis Khan's Hell (1964)
- Gladiator from Sparta (1964)
- Maciste against the Mongols (1963)
- Great World Hero (1963)
- The most powerful gladiator in the world (1962). The second version of the film with credits.
- Maciste, The World's Strongest Man (1961)
- Maciste in the Valley of the Kings (1960)
- Goliath and the Dragon (1960)
