Competition " Mr. Olympia"

»
1980
was an IFBB professional bodybuilding competition held on October 4, 1980 at the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia.

The event was one of the most talked about competitions in the history of bodybuilding. While training for his acting role in the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian, Arnold Schwarzenegger stunned the bodybuilding world by unexpectedly retiring and introducing the Mr. Olympia competition one day before the event and after training for just eight weeks before the beginning . When asked about his decision to enter the competition, Arnold said, "We're going to start filming the first few scenes (of Conan) in October, and so I really wanted to be muscular, because the idea was that Conan was very muscular. a heroic looking guy, and that I must be in great shape... the closer I got to this competition, the more people started speculating on it. the idea that I would compete, and especially since I started thinking about the possibility. So about 3 or 2 weeks ago I decided, well, I thought it would be a fun challenge to do something in 8 weeks, which is what most guys do when preparing for a year or two ahead" [1]

Frank Zane, three-time Mr. Olympia champion, entered the competition after recovering from a life-threatening injury. Although Zane made a full recovery and retained his definition, much of his muscle from last year was missing. Other competition favorites, including Mike Mentzer, Chris Dickerson and Boyer Coe, were in excellent form, making the 1980 event one of the most competitive Mr. Olympia events.

After the final judging, Arnold was declared the winner. This decision was criticized by members and competitors as Arnold lacked his usual size and muscularity. Many spectators booed when the results were announced. After he finished in second place, Dickerson jumped off the stage screaming "I can't believe it!" Although Coe and Mentzer were tied for fourth in points, Mentzer was awarded fifth place. Mentzer openly stated that he was the victim of politics and conspiracy. Zayn reportedly threw his trophy against a wall backstage. [2] During his acceptance speech, Arnold acknowledged how close the decision was, saying, "I have to be very honest, this was the highest level of competition I've ever faced in competition in my life." [1]

After the competition, many competitors, including Frank Zane, Coe, Mentzer and Walker, vowed to boycott the 1981 competition. CBS Television attended and filmed the 1980 competition, but decided not to televise the competition as planned. This was the last time the Mr. Olympia competition was filmed by an American television company.

Story

The 1980 Mr. Olympia competition was the most representative of all those held before it. 16 of the world's strongest athletes took part in the fight for the Sandow statuette. In 1980, Arnold was preparing to star in the film “Conan the Barbarian” and was actively training, then he got the idea to compete at the 1980 Mr. Olympia competition, which was to be held in Sydney, Australia. Arnold Schwarzenegger spent 8 weeks of hard training preparing for the performance, although everyone was sure that this was preparation for filming a film. His participation in the tournament was kept secret, even when he stepped on board the plane flying to Australia no one knew about his intention to participate in the tournament. Everything became clear only after receiving the participant’s number in Sydney. All the athletes at the 1980 tournament were at Schwarzenegger's level, and some (according to experts) even surpassed him. Nevertheless, by the decision of the majority of judges, victory was given to the 6-time champion. Arnold himself assessed his form as 90% of his best result[3]. Arnold said this about his last victory: “I was in very bad shape, but I had no equal.”

The tournament was the last Mr. Olympia competition for Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mike Mentzer.

Judging

The tournament jury included Reg Park, Mits Kawashima, Albert Busek, Dan Howard, Brendan Ryan, Jacques Blommert and Mike Walczak[1].

The victory of Schwarzenegger, who by his own admission was not in the best shape[3], caused bewilderment among all the other fifteen contestants. In their unanimous opinion, the jury made the wrong decision. Even the journalistic group CBS Sports (English)Russian, which covered the events of the tournament, was at a loss, expecting that Mike Mentzer, who took only fifth place according to the results of the judges' vote, would be named champion[1].

    Excerpt characterizing Mr. Olympia 1980

-Where did you go? – Natasha asked. - Change the water in the glass. I'll finish the pattern now. “You’re always busy, but I can’t do it,” said Natasha. -Where is Nikolai? - He seems to be sleeping. “Sonya, go wake him up,” said Natasha. - Tell him that I call him to sing. “She sat and thought about what it meant, that it all happened, and, without resolving this question and not at all regretting it, again in her imagination she was transported to the time when she was with him, and he looked with loving eyes looked at her. “Oh, I wish he would come soon. I'm so afraid that this won't happen! And most importantly: I'm getting old, that's what! What is now in me will no longer exist. Or maybe he’ll come today, he’ll come now. Maybe he came and is sitting there in the living room. Maybe he arrived yesterday and I forgot.” She stood up, put down the guitar and went into the living room. All the household, teachers, governesses and guests were already sitting at the tea table. People stood around the table, but Prince Andrei was not there, and life was still the same. “Oh, here she is,” said Ilya Andreich, seeing Natasha enter. - Well, sit down with me. “But Natasha stopped next to her mother, looking around, as if she was looking for something. - Mother! - she said. “Give it to me, give it, mom, quickly, quickly,” and again she could hardly hold back her sobs. She sat down at the table and listened to the conversations of the elders and Nikolai, who also came to the table. “My God, my God, the same faces, the same conversations, dad holding the cup in the same way and blowing in the same way!” thought Natasha, feeling with horror the disgust rising in her against everyone at home because they were still the same. After tea, Nikolai, Sonya and Natasha went to the sofa, to their favorite corner, where their most intimate conversations always began. “It happens to you,” Natasha said to her brother when they sat down in the sofa, “it happens to you that it seems to you that nothing will happen - nothing; what was all that was good? And not just boring, but sad? - And how! - he said. “It happened to me that everything was fine, everyone was cheerful, but it would come to my mind that I was already tired of all this and that everyone needed to die.” Once I didn’t go to the regiment for a walk, and there was music playing... and so I suddenly became bored... - Oh, I know that. I know, I know,” Natasha picked up. – I was still little, this happened to me. Do you remember, once I was punished for plums and you all danced, and I sat in the classroom and sobbed, I will never forget: I was sad and I felt sorry for everyone, and myself, and I felt sorry for everyone. And, most importantly, it wasn’t my fault,” Natasha said, “do you remember? “I remember,” said Nikolai. “I remember that I came to you later and I wanted to console you and, you know, I was ashamed. We were terribly funny. I had a bobblehead toy then and I wanted to give it to you. Do you remember? “Do you remember,” Natasha said with a thoughtful smile, how long ago, long ago, we were still very little, an uncle called us into the office, back in the old house, and it was dark - we came and suddenly there was standing there... - Arab, - Nikolai finished with a joyful smile, “how can you not remember?” Even now I don’t know that it was a blackamoor, or we saw it in a dream, or we were told. - He was gray, remember, and had white teeth - he stood and looked at us... - Do you remember, Sonya? - Nikolai asked... - Yes, yes, I also remember something, - Sonya answered timidly... - I asked my dad and mom about this blackamoor, - said Natasha. - They say that there was no blackamoor. But you remember!

    Who is it suitable for?

Despite the sporty context of the hairstyle, Olympia looks feminine and sophisticated. The option with classic styling highlights the existing charm and makes the woman mysterious and romantic. This is facilitated by the uneven graduated contour of the haircut.

“Olympia” is chosen by women of different ages and social status. Deeper grading will add mischief to the image and draw attention to the face. Smooth features will soften imperfections in appearance. When choosing haircut parameters, pay attention to the following:

    1. Ladies with a round face are advised to choose a medium length. The presence of bangs is mandatory. The crown can be profiled more by adding additional volume.
    2. Girls with a triangular oval should not expose the sides of their face too much. It is better to deepen the graduation. Bright heterogeneity in length will additionally distract attention from the imperfection of the face shape.
    3. For those with a square, elongated face, bangs will help. In the first case, a beveled format model is recommended, in the second - a long straight one.

"Olympia" is ideal for hair with an even, slightly curly structure. Natural tight curls will spoil the impression of a haircut and will require careful styling. Although homogeneous chemistry will not prevent you from enjoying the result.

Attention! Sparse hair will also not be a good basis for a hairstyle.

    Popular variations

In the 80s, Olympia was more often combined with perm. It is in this version that the haircut looks like a uniform cap. Modern fashionistas consider such styling to be outdated. Sometimes they perform retro styling. The hair is curled in the middle part, resulting in an interesting semblance of a curl. The option looks unusual.

You can get a retro-style look using Olympia for straight hair. The central strip is lightly combed to achieve volume. Hair is left in its natural position or combed back. The result requires fixing with varnish. The appearance is a little careless, rebellious.

An interesting image is created using a wet effect. For styling you will need gel or wax. Wet strands are treated with the product. The hair is distributed with your fingers, achieving a neat mess. The styling is suitable for straight and chemically permed hair.

    Phil Heath

In 2011, Cutler's student and friend Phil Heath managed to defeat Jay, pushing him to second place.
In 2012, during Jay Cutler's absence due to injury, it was easy for Phil to become the winner for the second time. In 2013, Jay failed to show decent form, so he took only 6th place, and Phil Heath again celebrated his victory. In 2014, there was again intrigue between Kai and Phil, but the four-time champion again showed the best form. At the end of the article, I suggest you watch 2 videos. On the first you can watch the first 12 champions, on the second video a video with Phil Heath's victory at the 2011 Olympia.

Performing independently and in the salon

There is no need to try to perform Olympia on your own. Errors in work look sad. It often takes time to correct the result. You can only shorten your bangs with your own hands and change the expression of the contour in front.

In the salon, hairdressers master the tools, are familiar with all popular forms, and can create a hairstyle according to the picture. The services of a professional will cost on average 500–1000 rubles.

    Ronnie Coleman

This guy came out of nowhere and had great form. To date, there have never been such massive athletes. Coleman's competitive weight was 138 kilograms; to date, not a single bodybuilder has entered the Olympia with such a weight. In 1999, Jay Cutler appeared in the arena of professional bodybuilding, who already in 2001 was able to provide worthy competition to Coleman and almost won against him - according to the results of the first day, Cutler beat Ronnie by 6 points, but Ronnie Coleman managed to prepare and still beat him by 4 points. Cutler took 2nd place three more times, but managed to overtake Ronnie only in 2006.
