6 Top CrossFit Athletes to Watch in 2022

Six of the best elite CrossFitters who want to become famous in the professional community. Their results at regionals in 2022 are still being discussed, and they may break their own records in the coming year.

This year's CrossFit Open and Games promises to be an exciting spectacle. There was one major change in CrossFit this year: five-time Best Athlete on Earth, Mat Fraser, retired.

The official word on Tia-Claire Toomey, who was four-time "best woman" on Earth, has not yet been released, but previous catwalk queens like Sara Sigmundsdottir are thinking about beating her again, and seriously considering it.

This opens up a lot of opportunities for other athletes in the community. The “old guys” may be sad about retirement, but they don’t stop working on themselves.

Look what these six people are thinking. These guys competed at the 2022 regionals and didn't make it to the CrossFit Games finals. But anything can happen this year. What has changed for them since then?

Lazar Dukic - Europe's hidden gem

Lazar finished eighth at the European Regionals in 2022, which is already good. But eighth place will force him to give up everything or train harder.

Dukic falls into the second category. Since then, he has become Serbia's strongest man in the last four open tournaments and finished fifth at the 2019 Dubai CrossFit Championships. He was ahead of Brent Fikowski, Pat Wellner, Roman Khrennikov and Bjorgvin Karl Gudmundsson.

In doing so, he beat out Elliot Simmonds, Johnne Koski, Jason Smith and Jeffrey Adler from Canada, who made it to the CrossFit finals in 2022. At 25, Dukic is ready to show what he's been up to over the last year. He calls himself “a much better athlete than I was back then ,” and we believe him.

CrossFit is a circuit training routine that involves alternating intense strength and functional exercises.

The CrossFit training concept is rightfully considered one of the best in the development of general physical fitness. It’s not for nothing that many law enforcement agencies and special services include classes on this system in their personnel training program.

Founding Father

Although CrossFit has only been around for a few years, its founder, former gymnast Greg Glassman, began developing this training system more than 20 years ago. And in 2001, the first specialized training hall was opened in California.

CrossFit is a registered brand, so to open an affiliated gym and conduct training, you must complete training and receive a Level 1 Trainer certificate.

Bringing CrossFit to the masses, Greg Glassman states, “Our specialty is no specialization.” This is the main attraction of the destination. By doing CrossFit, you will not only improve your health, but also improve the body's key abilities: strength, power, endurance, speed, flexibility, coordination, agility and accuracy.

Unlike many sports, CrossFit does not focus on a few skills, but develops you comprehensively. It doesn’t matter whether you are a teenager, a girl, a former special forces soldier, or even a pensioner, by varying the load and intensity, everyone can benefit from CrossFit.

Crossfit in Russia

The first Russian CrossFit Championship was held in July 2012 in Moscow. 60 people took part in the tournament. And since 2013, the country's main crossfit competitions are the winter games and the summer Heraklion Cup, held in Moscow.

Where to begin

Summer, while the weather is good outside, is a wonderful time to take the first timid steps into the exciting world of functional training.

The first, and most important thing, is to visit a doctor and make sure there are no restrictions on playing sports.

The second thing is to find a place. Since the basic CrossFit exercises are based on bodyweight, you won't need any additional equipment. Therefore, when you see a free lawn, square, or playground, you can safely stay there.

The ideal would be to find a sports area, of which there are now many in courtyards, and even more so in parks.

Equipment

This is also one of the advantages of CrossFit. At first, you just need a comfortable tracksuit and hard-soled sneakers. If you decide to train hard, then you should take your choice of clothing more seriously.

It is best to give preference to tight-fitting styles, then you can watch the work of your muscles.

For example, the now very popular compression fitness clothing is ideal for functional training. Important accessories: headband, knee pads and gloves.

Complex for beginners

Vladimir Saidashev, trainer of group and personal CrossFit classes, certified CrossFit level 1 trainer, advises starting training with multi-joint exercises that involve as many large muscles as possible, but do not require special skills.

Any workout should begin with a warm-up. The simplest thing is to jog a little. Afterwards, you can perform classic squats and push-ups to wake up the muscles and joint-ligamentous apparatus. It is better to do all this at an easy pace, since during the warm-up you need to warm up, and not get tired. After this, a joint warm-up is usually performed.

Well, then you can start the main training. Typically, a training complex (WOD - Workout of the Day) consists of several exercises that are compiled by the trainer depending on the tasks and goals of each specific workout.

The main goal for beginners will most likely be to master the basic lifts of any objects, as well as learn to work with their own body, correctly understanding the tasks of a particular movement and how the joints should work when performing these exercises.

Movements in CrossFit can be divided into three groups: those performed with your own body, those performed with weights, and cardio. There are some movements that are associated only with CrossFit. For example, burpees, or throwing a ball at a target.

Therefore, at the first training session, in order to still feel the spirit of CrossFit, you can start with them.

But since we chose training without equipment, ball throws can be replaced by hanging leg raises on the horizontal bar or sit-ups (abdominal fold).

For the first time, you can use the 21-15-9 scheme, popular in CrossFit. That is, you need to do three circles with a decreasing number of repetitions of each exercise.

In the first round there are 21 throws and 21 lifts/sit-ups, in the second - 15, and in the third - nine. All this can be diluted, for example, by jumping rope and after each round of exercises, perform 100 jumps.

To some it may seem very easy, but to others it may seem unrealistically difficult. The main thing is to learn to feel your body and select the load for yourself. But remember that our body is capable of a lot, so don’t be alarmed if you can’t complete the last repetitions.

At the end of your workout, be sure to do some stretching.

Like-minded people

Despite the competitive spirit of sports, as in any individual sport, the main opponent is yourself. With every approach, every day, you strive to become the best version of yourself. Therefore, CrossFit companies usually have a warm, friendly environment.

These people know and understand better than anyone how much time and effort is invested in the result and how much pain is overcome.

In many Russian cities there are specialized crossfit clubs or communities that conduct joint training in gyms or parks.

In Moscow, it won’t be difficult for you to find a “healthy” company of crossfit lovers and connoisseurs. And to do this, it is not at all necessary to spend money on a subscription to a fitness club, because many regular workouts are held in the parks of the capital.

For whom

“CrossFit is not divided into men's and women's. It is the same for everyone, like other sports, like athletics, basketball, etc. The most important thing is that CrossFit, or functional all-around, as it is also called, can be practiced by everyone, says Natalya Imshenetskaya, multiple winner of the Heraklion tournament and Russian champion in CrossFit. “There are no age restrictions, both children and old people can safely take the path of CrossFit, and, if desired, even compete.”

Therefore, if you are brave, but also want to become dexterous, skillful and strong, then CrossFit is the ideal choice.

Giorgos Karavis - hard work

Giorgos Karavis has a CrossFit resume that may make him look like he's out of shape. But he's working hard to change that impression. In 2022 he finished 31st in the European Championship and has continued to rise since then.

Between 2022 and 2022, he moved up from 79th to 74th in the CrossFit Open. He's ranked 34th in 2022 and his Sanctionals record is definitely something to talk about.

In January 2022, he was talking about fifth place, but he was passed by Mat Fraser, David Shorunke, Lukas Hogberg and Bronislav Olenkovic.

What will the winner receive?

The winners receive cash prizes; the amount of remuneration has increased significantly in recent years. If in 2007 the winners received $500, now the amount has increased to 300 thousand. In addition to the main prize, the winner receives an award for achievements in the individual competition, $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 for first, second and third place, respectively, in each category won. There can be a lot of rewards for personal competition.

At previous competitions, the leader among men won $322,000, of which $300 thousand for the overall championship, 18 thousand for six first places and another 4 thousand for two second places. The female winner received $319,000, in addition to the main prize, she took five first places ($15,000), second place ($2,000) and two third places ($2,000).

At the first tournaments, the sponsor was Adidas; since 2010, a long-term agreement has been concluded with Reebok. Now the sponsoring company not only ensures the holding of competitions, but also popularizes this sport around the world.
