The following characteristics were also taken into account:

  • According to the filling method, the equipment can be rigid and bulk;
  • Material. Popular models are made of polyester, nylon, knitwear and canvas;
  • Weight. An important parameter is the weight of the shells. It can be 0.5 kg or more. Devices over 5 kg are used by athletes. Weights for running should be from 0.5 kg;
  • Reliability of fixation. The fasteners must hold well, as this affects ease of use.

Weights are classified as cardio-stimulating, not strength, exercises. They allow you to strengthen the cardiovascular system, as well as tone your muscles.

Harm and contraindications

Unfortunately, unlike arm weights, leg weights have certain disadvantages and contraindications:

  • It is not recommended to wear weights for more than 6 hours at a time. They compress key arteries and veins, which increases swelling and can significantly limit leg mobility throughout the day.
  • It is not recommended to use heavy lead cuffs. Despite their undeniable advantages in the form of successful fastening, fabric and invisibility, they cause lead poisoning.
  • It is not recommended to practice striking movements while wearing heavy weights. Due to the change in the point of contact with the projectile, and most importantly due to the inertia of movement in the weights, the impulse movement will easily twist your knee joint.
  • It is not recommended to wear weights for people suffering from varicose veins. The reason is the same as in the first case - pinching of arteries and veins.

Criterias of choice

First of all, before choosing sports equipment, you need to decide why leg weights are needed in your particular case. If you're using them exclusively for HIIT, then you want the stiffest option with the most weight. If this is a cardio exercise, then you need to select weights based on the material and attachment point to avoid possible dislocations. And if you decide to choose leg weights for everyday wear, then you should think about their size and maximum inconspicuousness and wearing comfort.

Selection criterionHow to evaluate? Optimal solution
Weight of weightLarge weights are designed for basic exercises or walking. Medium weight weights are suitable for long runs. Light weight is suitable for practicing coordination of movements (for example, in striking types of exercises). Depends on your goals.
Fabric cuff and fasteningsTwo important factors depend on the fabric. The first is ease of wearing. The stiffer the fabric, the more likely it is that the weight will chafe. At the same time, the durability of the weighting agent itself depends on the rigidity of the fabric. You need to choose based on your feeling of comfort. Fabric tears can always be sewn up.
Shape and attachment pointLeg weights come in oblong and classic cuff shapes. Long weights allow you to distribute the weight more evenly, but they very often compress the calf muscle, which creates some inconvenience when wearing. Cuffs are limited to small weights. At the same time, they have a more balanced load lever. Depends on the condition of the veins and arteries.
Weight diameterThis determines whether you can wear weights under your clothes in everyday life.Depends on your goals.
Filler usedThere are three main types of weights:
  1. Sand weights. They are light in weight.
  2. With lead. These are mainly old Soviet weights, which are not recommended to be worn on an ongoing basis due to the toxicity of the metal.
  3. Metal weights with weight adjustment plates.

The best resistance bands

Oh, this is not an easy job.

However, many would prefer doing exercises with weights on their legs and arms in the comfort of their own home rather than walking in any weather. Remember two simple rules:

arms and legs with weights on them cannot be swung, movements must be smooth and slow; When doing leg exercises, always lean your hand on something so as not to lose balance - after all, your center of gravity is significantly shifted!

So, give it a try.

1. Arm raises

With weighted bracelets on your arms, you can work your chest, shoulders, and arms in one exercise. Stand up straight, you can lean your back against the wall. Shoulders are turned, arms are lowered along the body. Extend your fingers, tighten your palms and raise your arms in front of you, parallel to the floor. In this position, make “scissors” with them up and down with a small amplitude, counting to 20. Then raise your arms above your head and make “scissors” to the right and left, again counting to 20. Smoothly lower your straight arms through the sides and stretch them lengthwise housings.

Do 2 series of 15 times.

2. Hip lift

When the thigh is loaded, the buttocks are also strengthened.

Stand with your side to a wall or chair, lean on your hand, with your other hand resting on your side. The supporting leg is the one closest to the wall.

Straighten the second one, extend your toes and smoothly lift your straight leg in front of you as far as you can. Also smoothly lower and raise your leg again, but this time strictly to the side. Return down again, change the position of the toe - pull it towards you. Pull it back and up to the limit, and then bend it forcefully, as if touching your buttock with your heel. You can lean forward slightly without bending your lower back. Then switch legs.

Do 20 repetitions on each leg, in series of 5-10 repetitions on one side.

3. Slim waist

Reduces waist and abdominal volume.

Stand straight with your feet slightly wider than your shoulders. One hand rests at the side. Pull your stomach in and do not relax it throughout the entire exercise. Raise your other arm vertically, extend and tense your palm. Turn your palm inward and stretch it up and slightly inward. Shoulders and hips should not move much. Feel the pulling pressure in the waist and sides. Slowly, smoothly reach for your raised hand, counting to 10. You can slightly tilt your body in the direction of movement, but you don’t need to move your pelvis! Then switch sides.

Do it alternately to the right and left, 10–15 times in each direction, 2 series.

4. Leg reduction

The exercise is intended for the most difficult area to work - the inner thighs.

Lie on your side. Bend your lower arm at the elbow, lean on it and rest your head on your palm. Bend the leg that is on top at the knee and place your foot on the floor closer to the buttocks. Place your hand on the floor in front of you. Straighten your lower leg and extend it along the floor, bringing it as close to your chest as you can. Smoothly raise and lower that leg, being careful not to put it on the floor. If it is very difficult, you can bend it slightly. Then turn over and switch sides. Do 3 sets on each leg for 10–20 repetitions.

5. Flat stomach

This exercise will help you get beautiful, toned abs.

Lower your back onto the mat, place your hands up to your elbows on the floor and lean your back on them. Bend your knees and lift your heels off the floor. Tighten your stomach, keep your legs bent and relaxed. Pull them towards your chest, feeling how your abdominal muscles work, then move them back to a comfortable position. Throw your body back as far as possible, don’t throw your head back, and don’t put your feet on the floor!

Do 3 series of 10-15 reps.

I can't bear my own burden

Weights are good for those who use walking to lose weight, including with poles (Nordic walking). You have already achieved the first results, and suddenly... the progress is over. The load is no longer enough for the fat remaining on the sides to continue to melt. Meanwhile, your figure is still far from ideal. What to do? Switch from walking to running? But this doesn't suit everyone. It’s much easier to load yourself with additional weights. If you carry 2-3 extraneous kilograms, the load and heart rate will increase noticeably, and the weight will slowly but surely begin to decrease.

A belt is considered the safest when walking, but keep in mind that it is more difficult to stay on your feet if you slip, for example, on slippery clay. A beginner athlete can hang 1–2 kg on his belt. Ankle bracelets are hung on the ankles, right above the sneakers. Start with 0.5–1 kg and carefully monitor your walking technique. Be sure to place your heel flat when going up steps or hills, otherwise you risk injuring your Achilles tendons. Weighting on the belt increases the load on the muscles of the legs, buttocks, abdomen and lower back. Weights placed on the ankles put more strain on the hips (especially the front and back surfaces) and buttocks.

Weighted bracelets on your arms increase the load on your entire body, but after a workout you will first feel unusual fatigue in your arms, shoulders and upper back. This does not mean that other parts of the body did not work, but the muscles listed were the most susceptible to stress.
