A fitness trainer is a specialist who has enough knowledge that can be applied to develop the human body. The trainer’s activity is in the “person-to-person” sphere, so he must be able to interact with people.

Where to train to be a fitness trainer

Despite the emergence of many different courses, a coach with an education is valued higher and is able to build his career faster.

If you decide to get a higher education in physical education, you need to take the Unified State Exam after 11th grade.

Main items:

  • Biology.
  • Russian language.

To enter the university you will need to pass an additional test. This is usually a test of basic knowledge and general physical fitness. The test varies by institution.

You can get secondary vocational education in college after 9th grade. For admission, you need a high average score on the certificate, as well as practical fulfillment of the standards for exercises. Subsequently, with this education, you can work as a physical education and sports teacher.

You can learn to become a trainer or gym instructor if you take courses at a physical education school, sports academy or other organization licensed to conduct educational activities.

Some of them have strict requirements for candidates, for example, having a higher education in physical education. But in most cases, such courses are available to anyone who has training experience, has participated in competitions, or wants to get acquainted with the profession from scratch.

It is possible to take fitness trainer courses remotely. But to work with clients, personal presence during training is recommended, as teachers analyze the main mistakes during training, show the correct exercise technique, etc.

Are you ready to provide services?

Fitness is a service industry. One of the first true reasons for a client to buy a club card is his urgent need for communication and attention. This means that the instructor must initially be sociable (ready to provide services with pleasure), sociable, non-conflict, and be able to easily find a common language with strangers. Often the instructor has to perform the functions of a personal psychologist, for example, listening to the client’s problems, which is actually not easy. If you love fitness, but diverse and constant communication does not bring you pleasure, you are a deep introvert and do not intend to break yourself, it is better to think about a different professional path.

These two conditions for success as a fitness instructor are determined by nature and are little subject to correction. Next, we will talk about what can and should be acquired on the path of a professional instructor.

How to become a fitness trainer without education

The easiest way is to take special courses for gym instructors. Training takes different amounts of time, depending on what kind of job a person wants to do.

Gym instructor is the most popular area of training, as it ultimately gives you the opportunity to work in almost any gym or sports club.

Another popular area of training is personal trainer. It includes:

  • Gym Instructor program.
  • Rules of the training process.
  • Knowledge of nutrition and nutritional science.
  • Service and sales in the field of fitness.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, biology and physiology.
  • Methods for diagnosing the client's condition.
  • Basics of personal training.

The range of disciplines may vary depending on the educational organization.

Some fitness clubs cooperate with organizations that train fitness instructors, so upon completion of training they can immediately get a job in suitable sports centers.

Is it possible to become a coach from scratch?

Can. And there are plenty of such examples in world practice. Everyone knows the story of the two-time Champions League winner, multiple winner of various national championships and simply “special” Jose Mourinho, who worked as a translator at Barcelona in the mid-90s, and before that he coached in children’s and youth teams in Portugal. Former Zenit coach Andre Villas-Boas went to study coaching at the age of 17, at 19 he received the necessary license to work as an assistant, at 32 he led an adult team for the first time, and at 33 he won the national championship and the Europa League with Porto.

And in Russia there is also a good example. Leonid Slutsky, at the age of 19, suffered a severe knee injury after falling from a tree, which prevented him from becoming a professional football player, and began coaching children at the Volgograd club "Olympia". As a result, the specialist trained several football players who even played for the Russian national team - Roman Adamov and Denis Kolodin. At the age of 34, the coach headed “Moscow”, then “Wings of the Soviets”. And everyone knows the future path of Leonid Viktorovich - several championships with CSKA, work in Europe, and now the specialist is raising Rubin from the bottom.
