Arm wrestling is a sport for real men. How to train properly to become a champion

Recently, many people have become interested in strength sports - arm wrestling. This type of wrestling involves two athletes, whose main goal is to overcome the opponent’s hand by pressing it to a pillow located on a special table.

This sport originated in sunny California around 1952. Its founder is considered to be American journalist Bill Soberanes. It was he who first organized arm wrestling competitions. After the first competitions, armwrestling won over many spectators with its spectacle and spread throughout the world.

Now this is one of the most traumatic sports, and athletes need to train a lot and strengthen the ligaments, joints and muscles of the hands. Therefore, there are special exercises for arm wrestling. Considering that they include practicing techniques with a partner, first you need to familiarize yourself with the rules of wrestling.

What is arm wrestling?

Today there are a lot of people in the world who are fond of sports.
And this is not surprising - after all, today there is a lot of promotion of a healthy lifestyle. With our problems, which we often cannot control, playing sports is very important to keep our body and spirit in great shape for as long as possible. There are many types of sports, and even the most harmless one can have a significant impact on you and your body. After all, you don’t have to spend all day and night in the gym and strain all muscle groups at once. Sometimes a certain effort applied to one point is enough. For example, as it happens in arm wrestling. What do you know about this sport? Surely many of you in your life have jokingly or seriously tried to wrestle your opponent with your hands on a desk or table?

Yes, in this sport athletes try to wrestle each other on their arms and that’s the point. It looks quite simple, but in fact, this sport is fraught with many secrets, interesting moments, rules and techniques of fighting. Want to know more? Then this article is for you.

Additional recommendations

When wrestling, athletes usually try to look to the side, strongly twisting their head and body. This is a classic mistake that offers no benefit but can result in serious injury. You need to look at the place of contraction and keep your body in a strictly vertical position.

And, of course, we must not forget about proper nutrition. Under heavy loads, diet alone will not be enough, so vitamin complexes will help replenish the supply of essential substances. We can recommend the drug Leveton Forte , which is made only from natural ingredients and contains many essential minerals and amino acids.

And be sure to conduct trial sparrings, without which arm wrestling is simply unthinkable. A fight with a strong opponent is training for real men and the best test of physical readiness. If you have no one to practice with, use special harnesses to simulate wrestling. Now that you know which muscles to pump for arm wrestling and other nuances of this type of spot, all that remains is to start training to find out the limit of your strength.

History of the emergence and development of arm wrestling

This sport and martial arts has quite ancient origins. Perhaps also because the process itself looks simple and fist fights in English villages and cities have been known for a very long time. It was there that, according to historians, this sport first appeared. The reason for this was the not very wide streets of that area, which were not conducive to an ordinary fist fight, and it was necessary to sort things out differently.

It is also known that courageous Vikings sometimes resolved conflicts in this way. Already in the tenth century, this method of combat appeared on our lands, on the territory of Kievan Rus. There, too, this type of fighting became popular mainly among visitors to various taverns and taverns. Over the next five centuries, arm wrestling spread so much that it became recognizable and popular throughout Europe. It would seem that this sport should lead and be one of the best, but it seems to have been forgotten about for a long time. It began to be revived only in the mid-twentieth century in the United States of America.

It was in 1952 that journalist Bill Soberanes decided to organize the first official competition in this type of combat in the city of Petalumo. The competition took place in one of the city bars and the audience who saw it live was shocked. Everyone liked it, everyone perceived it as something special. Naturally, a very large number of people immediately appeared and competitions began to be held regularly.

All this led to the fact that journalist Soberanes in 1961 became the founder of the world's first arm wrestling sports organization at that time. He did not stop there, and a year later the official championship in this sport was held. With this championship, in fact, the rise of the sport of arm wrestling began.

And for this we can thank Bill Soberanes. For this he was honored with a bronze monument in the city of Petalumo, the very place where it all began. After this, arm wrestling began to be popularized first in the States, and after it began broadcasting on one of the television companies, the whole world learned about this sport.

This sport came to us after its re-start in the late 80s. Before that, he was not professional and only had amateur status. They did it more as a joke and for fun. The first tournament in the USSR was held in 1989 in Moscow. Three teams from three countries took part in it: Canada, the United States of America and, in fact, the Soviet Union.

Due to not very good preparation and experience, almost all of our athletes lost, except one. He was Olympic champion Saltan Rakhmanov. This also happened because the USSR team included players from completely different strength sports. This problem was solved quite quickly, and already in 1992 the Russian team showed one of the best results at the tournament.

And the rest of the post-USSR countries are traditionally strong. Since that time, they have been considered one of the best in the world in this combat sport.

Arm wrestling rules (briefly)

So, at first glance, this sport seems simple and the task too: simply overcome an opponent using force, but this is not so. Even in this sport, it is very important to follow the rules and know them. So let's talk about everything in order.

Competitions are divided into personal and team. In personal competitions, the result of each participant is taken into account and the one who has it better wins. The winner is determined in his weight category.

Team competitions have a difference - the result of one specific player is counted for the whole team, due to which it can win. The system here is the same as in the double event - players receive points for fighting with their left and right hands. After which they are summed up. There are several variations of the competition:

  • System 1 - elimination from the tournament after two losses.
  • System 2 - Olympic - elimination after one loss.
  • System 3 - round robin - everyone fights everyone else.

The choice of system for the tournament is made before the start and is entered into the competition regulations.

When the judge announces an athlete, he must leave and appear on the court within two minutes. Otherwise, he will be declared defeated.

Athletes must hold hands in the correct position and demonstrate this to the judge. In turn, the judge must clearly see the joints and fingers of the participants, thus confirming the correctness of the grip. The grip of the athletes' hands must be clearly located above the center of the table. The hand should be in a straight line with the forearm.

Each of the participants must grasp the pin as if it were a support, but the strength of the support is regulated directly by the athlete himself. There is also a control line beyond which the shoulders of each participant should not go. Also, your shoulders should be parallel to the edge of the table. It is also allowed to rest your foot on the table stand in front or behind you. They start the match with the team Are you ready? March! (Ready? Go?).

The match ends with a stop command. The winner is the athlete whose opponent touched the special roller with his fingers, hand, or forearm, or crossed the conventional horizontal line of the edge of this very roller.

If the hold is broken, or the referee issues a warning, there may be a thirty-second break, but then the opponents' hands are tied with a special belt to avoid future holds. If the opponents meet again in the final, then after the last match they cannot rest for more than three minutes.

It is also worth mentioning that there are certain violations in this sport. These include:

  • Disobeying the referee's commands. There are two of them in the duel - one on each side. And their commands must be carried out unquestioningly.
  • False start. One of the participants may start the technique too early.
  • Lift your elbow off the armrest.
  • Elbow slipping from the armrest.
  • Cross the line of the center of the table with any part of the body that is not directly involved in the fight.
  • Touch the grip with your shoulder and head. This will be considered additional pressure on the opponent
  • Breaking the grip by one of the participants when he himself is in a critical position for himself. This is considered to be a deviation of the hand of one of the athletes by more than 45 degrees from the central vertical of the table.

  • Using a hold or grappling technique that could result in injury to that competitor.
  • Provocations. This includes many situations when one of the opponents tries to provoke the opponent into a foul or in some way enrage him. For example, to simulate a false start, one of the participants can jerk his hand in his direction before the start of the fight, pretending that it is his opponent. We will also include techniques that can cause injury to an opponent.
  • Lack of contact with the pin that opponents must hold on to.
  • You cannot come to the fight or to the tournament in general in a state of intoxication.
  • You also cannot use doping, stimulants, or various similar substances.
  • The moment when the hand goes beyond the shoulder line of one of the participants as a result of an attack by the second is also considered dangerous. This puts additional pressure on the joints of the elbow and shoulder, and quite a lot at that. In some cases it can lead to fracture. The judge must stop such actions.
  • Another situation is when one of the participants is hanging on the table: the shoulder is below table level, the elbow is straight. Here the emphasis is on the composition of the elbow and shoulder, and this technique is still not prohibited, therefore it is widespread among some competitors.

For such violations, the participant who committed them usually receives a warning. Two warnings are punishable by exclusion from the match and, accordingly, defeat. For insult, threats, bodily harm, attempts to harm the judge or participants in the competition, the athlete is excluded from the competition and his team does not receive any points for his performance.

Also, this sport has its own basic techniques and methods of fighting. Here are some of them:

  • Direct movement - after the referee starts the match, one of the participants sharply tilts his wrist to one side and pushes the opponent forward with the hand itself.
  • Reaching - the one who attacks, when bending his arm, does not release the grip and pulls his opponent’s hand.
  • Bottom hook - the participant bends his arm and in this position tries to escape from the pressure of his opponent. This is the most powerful technique there is and it is used very often among arm wrestlers. Very effective against opponents who are weaker.
  • Triceps - the participant moves his shoulder towards the opponent and presses the taut hand with the triceps.
  • On horseback is a very popular method when it comes to an opponent who is stronger. In this position, not the whole hand is used, but only the wrist, which bends the opponent from top to bottom and complicates the task.

Very often, participants use several tactics at once, which they successfully use in various combinations. This is what becomes the key to success in this sport. Therefore, this is also an intellectual duel. Athletes think through tactics long before the start of the match and prepare for their opponents for a long time. This is a very important process along with everything that happens on the site.

It is also worth mentioning separately about the traumatic nature of this sport. Yes, professional athletes are ready for anything and carefully work out all the techniques, but despite this, they also get injured. The most traumatic places, perhaps, are the arms, hands, forearms, and legs. Yes, legs can also very often suffer minor injuries, because athletes rest against the legs of the table and often this does not happen quite correctly.

5 basic exercises from Gennady Kvikviniya[edit | edit code]

Gennady Kvikvinia is a world and European champion in arm wrestling. Performs in the category up to 110 kg. Weight at the time of writing this material is 130 kg country - Georgia Gennady Kvikvinia

“When you just come to arm wrestling, you need to devote at least three years. in order to achieve good results in setting up technique and achieving minimum strength indicators. You need to have strong willpower to get through this stage of targeted training. Having performed in competitions, we can already see our strengths and weaknesses. After identifying your strengths, you need to continue adding strength to these movements without stopping. In three years, it is unlikely that you will be able to strengthen everything you want and become a universal armwrestler. Once you have mastered your strong movement, you can spend more time on the weaker aspects of your wrestling. Then at the next competitions, when your opponents see your struggle, where there are no weaknesses, when you have a strong hand, fingers, tension, biceps, your opponents will simply get lost. They will have nothing to oppose you. I have all the tournaments, from the beginning of my performances to the last start, in the recording and in my memory, I constantly review everything, draw conclusions and analyze myself based on the materials. I always need to know how effectively I am using this or that technique. Not everyone becomes a champion right away, I started with regional tournaments and so reached the World Championship, where I became a champion. My credo is to always be in good shape. The goal is not to fight with one specific opponent, but to be stronger than yourself and everyone. If I only focused on one person, I would never win a single tournament. Only with the attitude of being stronger than everyone else was I able to achieve results. I respect all my opponents, whether he is stronger or weaker, my attitude towards him is always friendly.

In the case when an opponent surpasses me in strength, I never get angry with him or with myself. Those emotions that arise during a fight. “It’s an adrenaline rush, it adds strength.”

Sparring[edit | edit code]

According to Gennady, sparring is the basis of armwrestling. Namely, developing and honing your signature movements. Whether a beginner or an experienced armwrestler, wrestling should be present in any case.

Table wrestling outside of competition (training wrestling) serves as a good simulator for developing technique and endurance in arm wrestling. Gennady also noted the fact that he spar with opponents who are weaker than him. This way he can work in all the movements he deems necessary. This happens due to the fact that the opponent creates pressure, but the partner does not have the strength to stop Gennady’s movements. If there is a training partner next to you. who is superior to you in strength, then the procedure will be as follows: the opponent must give you corners, while not attacking, but taking only a defensive position, and you, in turn, make an attacking movement. Since Gennady is generally superior to his sparring partners, with one armwrestler it is not possible to work out all the movements to the smallest detail. IN

On average, the number of sparring partners in Gennady’s training is 3-5. According to Gennady, sparring at the table is the final exercise of his training.

Curved bar biceps curls[edit | edit code]

In his arsenal of curved bar biceps curls, Gennady Kvikvinia performs two versions of this exercise. The first is standing biceps curls, the movement is performed in full amplitude. The second is biceps curls, sitting on the “Scott Bench”, the movement is performed with a short amplitude. There is a nuance in the first option; it lies in the fact that the movement is carried out together with the elbows. That is, the elbows are not statically fixed, but at the top point they should go slightly forward and upward along with the bar. As for weight, Gennady starts with 15 kg for 10 repetitions. The weight increase interval is as follows: 15 kg - 25 kg - 30 kg - 35 kg - 45 kg - 55 kg - 80 kg - 10 repetitions, 90 kg - 100 kg - 7 repetitions. Rest between sets for 1 minute. Next comes work on the “Scott Bench”. Here the interval for increasing working weights is as follows: 15 kg - 35 kg - 90 kg for 7 repetitions. The amplitude is incomplete.

Stretch[edit | edit code]

In this exercise, the brachioradialis muscle is included in the work. Having warmed up a little with a weight of 15 kg, Gennady begins to randomly lift the weight without a clear interval. Smoothly reaches the maximum weight on the block. Often, when Gennady is preparing for competitions and his form is close to peak, there is not always enough weight on the block. When the block is fully loaded, Gennady performs the movement to failure.

Grif[edit | edit code]

Many athletes note the great finger strength that Gennady Kvikvinia possesses. When Gennady went to show that secret movement with which you can get the key to the strength of your fingers, our team assumed that it would be something supernatural. But when we approached the apparatus and Gennady demonstrated the exercise, we were surprised. Simple standing Olympic bar lift. The maximum weight with which it was possible to work with this projectile was 130 kg. The entire exercise consists of 8 approaches. Each approach is 10-15 repetitions. The last approach is performed to failure.

Handle on straps[edit | edit code]

Gennady Kvikvinia's favorite exercise. Even when going on business trips, Gennady takes his pen with him. It is worth noting that many arm wrestlers love this exercise for its effectiveness. Also starts: 15 kg - Gennady’s basic warm-up weight. Then it gradually reaches its maximum weight. As for the number of approaches, it is from 8 to 10. The number of repetitions is 10-15.

Competition area

Each sport has its own characteristics. In arm wrestling, the playing area is the table. It is the main attribute of this competition. It must be special, made to the standard from the best materials. This is necessary because it is the table that takes on the entire load and pressure when two athletes fight.

It is very important that the table on which the athlete trains and works on his technique does not differ much from the tournament one. The height of the table should be one hundred and four centimeters to the armrest from the floor. The length and width of the armrest are eighteen centimeters. Height - five. Armrests are most often asymmetrical and not parallel.

Ottomans are where the hand of one of the participants falls when losing. They should be soft, but not screwed to the table, but simply inserted into special holes so that they can be easily removed. The ottomans are made with a special rubber coating on top. The table itself should also be soft, especially around the edges. The lines drawn on the table should be contrasting and clearly visible.

Handles, or pins, are made of steel with the addition of nickel. Rubber grips are prohibited. Also, to avoid serious leg injuries, the table legs should also be covered with rubber material. The platform on which the table is mounted must be stable and made of corrugated steel. The weight of the entire table is just over 40 kilograms.

The third secret is hand positions

In order to provide yourself with a certain advantage for wrestling, it is necessary to take into account the position of the hand with which the athlete is fighting. The point of the best position is to reduce the angle between the shoulder and forearm as much as possible. In this position, the athlete will have a large number of muscles grouped and activated, thereby providing himself with an additional influx of strength. The best hand position is considered to be when the athlete's fist is at chest level and the shoulders are parallel to the table.

This is such a sport - arm wrestling. The secrets listed in this article will help novice athletes develop their abilities.

Judging

The referee in this sport, as elsewhere, is the main one in the fight, because the outcome of the fight depends on his decision. Before the start of the fight, he calls the participants. When they come up and get caught, he checks the correctness and determines whether it is possible to give a start. He marks the beginning of the fight with certain words, as well as the ending. After the start, he watches the fight closely. In case of any violation, he stops the fight and either continues after a while or eliminates one of the opponents. He also makes sure that the fight does not lead to injuries or critical situations. His role in this sport is great, because he must be really decisive and confident when making decisions.

Basic rules

During the match, the wrestlers stand opposite each other at a special table. At the referee's command, they rest their feet on the floor, place their elbows on the soft armrests and establish a wrist grip. In arm wrestling, a "lock" is the joining of open palms so that the thumbs interlock. Athletes try to take a more advantageous position in advance. With their free hand, the combatants hold onto a special handle.

Basic requirements for wrestlers:

  • shoulders should be parallel to the edge of the table;
  • the start of the fight occurs only after the referee’s command;
  • opponents must fight only with a “lock”;
  • you cannot lift your elbow from the armrest;
  • It is prohibited to cross the center line of the table with your shoulders or head;
  • Any touching of the shoulder or head with the hands is prohibited;
  • During the fight, the legs should be pressed to the floor, and the free hand should tightly hold the table handle.

Equipment and equipment for arm wrestling

Perhaps many of you, imagining arm wrestlers, thought that the uniform and any equipment does not play a role here and does not make sense, then you are wrong. This is a sport like the others. If we talk about uniforms, these are special sports shoes and clothing that should be open in the area of the forearms and hands. If an athlete performs in a cap, then it must be turned back or removed completely.

You cannot use any bandages, bandages, or wristbands on your hands. You also need to remove rings, bracelets, and rings. At the same time, it is worth knowing that the skin of athletes should be clean and free of any diseases. If we are talking about team competitions, then the participants of one team must be in the same uniform at the tournament. It should make it clear which country or region is represented. Various logos, advertising slogans and other paraphernalia are allowed only after agreement with the tournament organizers.

Arm wrestling exercises

You don't have to go to the gym to train your physical strength. Here are the simplest exercises for arm wrestling at home.

Push ups

A popular and very effective arm wrestling exercise that helps strengthen the muscle groups of the arms, shoulders, back and abs. And reverse push-ups and dips are the best workouts for triceps. The main rules of classic push-ups are to avoid arching your back and not letting your chest touch the floor. We perform 10-20 repetitions for 3 approaches. Better at a fast pace.

Pull-ups

This is a great addition to the previous exercise. In addition, pull-ups help strengthen the latissimus dorsi muscles. For arm wrestling training, explosive pull-ups . With a sharp movement we raise the body up to chest level, hover in this position for a couple of seconds, then smoothly lower down. At the lowest point, do not straighten your elbows completely, holding there for a couple more seconds. We perform 3-5 repetitions in 3-4 approaches.

Pull-ups on towels

They should be highlighted especially because they also perfectly strengthen the wrist ligaments. Everything is clear with the work equipment. The main thing is to choose stronger towels and the same length. It is also necessary to hold on to them at the same level. We pull ourselves up at a slow pace. This exercise will not be easy to do at first, so don’t try to go over the bar right away. If you master these pull-ups, regular ones will be much easier for you.

Hammer curls with dumbbells

We take dumbbells with a regular grip. We extend our arms along the body, with the inside of our palms facing us. As you exhale, alternately or simultaneously raise the dumbbells to shoulder level by bending your elbows. We hold our hands in this position for 2-3 seconds. Then, while inhaling, slowly lower it back. All movements are performed at a smooth pace, without jerking. We do 3 sets of 15-20 repetitions.

Arm wrestling at home is remarkable for the ease of selecting sports equipment. Therefore, any weights of suitable shape and the same weight are suitable for the role of dumbbells. For example, a pair of heavy hammers. It is better to start with small weights - 5 kg.

Weighted wrist curls

The exercise is performed with a barbell or dumbbells. Beginners are recommended to do it with an empty bar. We sit on a chair or bench, placing our forearms on our thighs. Flexion-extension is performed only in the area of the wrist joint, since it is this area that is trained. We perform 10-15 repetitions in 3 approaches.

exercises with expanders will help you work out your forearms and hands . Classic squats (including with weights), cycling, walking up stairs and other simple exercises will help you train your leg muscles. Alexander Zass , is perfect .

Arm wrestling tournaments

There are a lot of arm wrestling tournaments in the world, both private and global. Among them, it is worth noting the World and European Championships, which regularly determine the best among the best. The program of the annual World Championship, for example, includes more than 30 different events for different categories and ages. As elsewhere, here age and weight categories divide the participants for a more equal fight.

You can also note several tournaments that are held directly in each country for participants from there. There are a lot of them, here are a few:

  • Zloty Tur World Cup is a Polish tournament that has international and professional status. One of the most respected and popular tournaments among armwrestlers.
  • Nemiroff World Cup is one of the most branded and popular tournaments among armwrestlers. Previously it was held under the auspices of the Polish tournament, which we talked about above.
  • The Golden Bear is a Moscow international tournament, although it is not held yet.

There are still a very large number of tournaments in the world, often they are local in nature.

Armwrestling Federation

Despite the fact that the World Arm Wrestling Federation is the main one in this sport, this sport is still not included in the Olympic list due to the fragmentation of federations and leagues. There really are a lot of them. The Worldwide alone includes members from eighty-two countries. It was founded in 1977 and is currently located in the Bulgarian city of Sofia. In addition to this, it is worth listing a few more organizations that are related to arm wrestling:

International:

but this is because it is the table that takes on the entire load and pressure when two athletes fight. What should an arm wrestling table be like?

It is also very important to properly equip the arm wrestling table. It’s easier to purchase a ready-made one that meets all standards. But if you wish, you can design it yourself. The working surface must have:

  • soft armrests 5 cm high;
  • pillows on which you need to place your opponent’s hand (10 cm high);
  • handles that opponents hold with their free hand (height - 15 cm, diameter - 3 cm);

In addition, there should be special soft foot rests. The total height of the table (including all elements) is 105 cm. Width and length are 66 and 90 cm, respectively.

When is arm wrestling contraindicated?

A universal rule for any sport is that you cannot train through pain. In addition, you should refrain from exercising if you have untreated injuries to the upper extremities. Especially after damage to the elbow and wrist joints. The same rule is also true for exacerbations of chronic joint diseases (arthritis, arthrosis, etc.)

And even after a common cold, it is better to let the body recover properly. Remember that infectious diseases have the unpleasant ability to affect joints. If you have existing heart or vascular diseases, it is recommended to start training only after consulting a doctor.

The second secret is hand and body movements

In order to increase the impact on your opponent's hand, use your body, but at the same time make sure that your shoulder does not cross the center of the table, otherwise you will be counted as a foul. If your biceps are well developed, use the hook technique. At the command “start”, with a sharp movement, twist the opponent’s hand in your direction. If your opponent has weak biceps, you will definitely overcome him.

Another technique is to stretch out the opponent’s arm; this must also be done at the start. To do this, with a lightning-fast movement, pull his hand in your direction, thereby you will put his hand in an awkward position and you will be able to overcome him, or the opponent’s hand will fly off the armrest, and he will be charged a foul, which will also have a better effect on your situation. But you should remember what arm wrestling requires from athletes. These secrets must be used only after the start command and with extreme caution, since if the technique is incorrect, violations of the rules on your part are possible.
