Our translation of an article from MuscleMag about the legend of the Golden Era of bodybuilding - Serge Nubret.

Back in action

In the late 60s, the bodybuilder plunged headlong into the sport and showed excellent results.
In 1970 he won the Mr. Universe title, from 1970-75. with the exception of 1971, he takes 2nd and 3rd places in Los Angeles at the Mr. Olympia. Schwarzenegger prevented Schwarzenegger from becoming the first Black Jaguar. Many argue that Arnold's victory in 1975 was dubious. Indeed, an unpleasant thing happened, because of which Serge decided to leave the IFBB and found the WABBA federation in 1976. However, the bodybuilder continues to participate in international tournaments and wins a number of awards and titles.

  1. In 1976 in London he received the title Mister Universe.
  2. In 1977 he became Mr. World.
  3. In 1981 he wins the international championship.
  4. In 1984, according to WABBA, he received the title of world champion.
  5. In 2003, at the age of 65, he showed an excellent result at the national tournament.

When Nubre was asked what was the main award for him, he said:

In 2006, together with Louis Javier, he wrote the book “I am... Me and God” (I am Me and God). Part is devoted to the biography of the athlete, the second to philosophical discussions about mysticism and Christianity. Three years later, the memoir “Young at 70” was released.

How did Serge Nubret's career develop in sports and creativity?

Meet one of the top bodybuilders in the world, holder of prestigious titles, writer, actor - Serge Nubre (Nubre) nicknamed “Black Panther”.

He is one of those representatives of the old school who appreciates the natural beauty of the body and without hesitation will exchange a mountain of muscles for chiseled relief and symmetrical proportions.

Looking at his figure, it’s hard to believe that he pumped up such muscles with moderate weights and repeated repetitions.

All about the person

Serge Nubret was born in the colony of Anse Bertrand, Guadeloupe in October 1938 into an ordinary family. When he was 12 years old, he emigrated to France with his parents.

The family settled in the suburbs of Paris, where the boy successfully graduated from high school. As a teenager, Serge became interested in sports. After finishing his studies, he came back to Guadeloupe to avoid being drafted into the French army.

The country was preparing for the Algerian War, and sitting in the trenches was not part of his plans.

When the time came to decide on a profession, the young man decided to take up sports seriously and become a “sculptor of his body.” His parents wanted him to be an accountant, but after much debate, Serge managed to convince them to accept his decision. They saw potential in their son and understood that accounting was clearly not his calling.

Serge is invited to train in Europe, but he refuses and signs a contract to star in the Italian film Return of the Titans.

After a successful start in cinematography, Serge only has time to discuss proposals with directors. , his filmography included 25 creative works.

In the 80s, he starred in the movie “Breakfast Included” as the owner of a fitness center in Paris. By a mystical coincidence, this is exactly what happened.

Serge Nubret's training

To keep himself in shape, Serge constantly trains and monitors his nutrition.

The main principle of training is to fill the target muscles with blood to the maximum using pumping.

Since the athlete works with moderate weights, long pauses between sets are avoided. As part of the 7th cycle, the main muscle groups are pumped twice, performing 12x8. Even at age 60, he systematically performed 50 sessions per week per group.

Weekly split :

  1. Day 1 – abdominal, pectoral muscles, quadriceps.
  2. Day 2 - back, abs again, back of the thighs.
  3. Day 3 - collar area, arms, abdominal muscles.
  4. Day 4 – torso, quadriceps, abdominal group.
  5. Day 5 – back, stomach, abs.
  6. Day 6 – triceps and biceps, shoulders, abdominal muscles.
  7. On Sunday, only abs.

On the eve of the competition, the athlete increases the pace and adds a repetition in each set. As a result, he completed the same amount of work in 10-15 minutes less. Judging by the anthropometric data, he chose the right strategy for himself.

  • with a height of 183 cm;
  • and weighing 100 kg;
  • torso diameter is 145 cm;
  • double-headed bundles - 55 cm;
  • waist - 70 cm;
  • calves – 49 cm.

Nutrition helped keep me in shape . Serge Nubret's diet was not varied:

“I eat a lot of meat, chicken, I like steaks. Before tournaments, they eat up to 6 pounds of red meat only. I also eat rice, beans, lentils, fruit."

Serge Nubret is not with us today. In 2009, the bodybuilder fell into a coma . He died on April 19 without regaining consciousness.

In the 80s, he starred in the movie “Breakfast Included” as the owner of a fitness center in Paris. By a mystical coincidence, this is exactly what happened.

The training scheme over a long period of time for a hardgainer is as follows:

1. Beginners train according to methods for beginners with the transition to standard impact training programs (whether you are a hard gainer or not is not important, since it is not yet clear whether you are one or not). 1 year is allotted for this.

2. After a year of systematic training, the results obtained are assessed. If the results are satisfactory (there is an increase in total body weight, the body itself has transformed towards athletic forms) - continue in the same spirit, training according to standard methods. If the results from training are unsatisfactory (despite systematic exercise and a properly structured diet, there are no signs of body transformation or they are barely noticeable), then you can enroll yourself in the ranks of hardgainers.

3. If you have enrolled yourself in the ranks of hardgainers, switch to shortened programs, use the principles of training and nutrition suitable for hardgainers (all the necessary information for this is on this site). You train according to abbreviated programs until you get results (this can be a year or several years). It is important to understand that if you are a hard gainer, then switching to shortened training will be more useful than standard training, but you should not expect a big miracle (the progress will not be fabulous, because you are not predisposed to muscle hypertrophy). The main programs for this period offered here are programs, and.

4. When shortened training ceases to give the same results when using a number of different programs, in order to further progress, switch to classical schemes (with a higher volume of load). The transition is best done with a gradual increase in load volume. This transition should provide a new shift in progress. The duration of the new (volume) training stage is determined individually. This may be a set of programs for a year, more than one year or less than a year. For the transition period, Program G has been proposed.

5. When high-volume programs stop producing results, return to low-volume (reduced) training schemes again.

Programs A, B and C proposed here are the author’s programs, with the help of which I had a significant jump in gaining muscle mass after switching to them from traditional programs, which, by and large, did not give any results (which is why I wanted to use them share, realized in the creation of this site).

A little about the main programs

Program A (as well as A II) is intended for athletes who have a significant body mass deficit (coefficient -10 and below; how to find out your coefficient is written below).

Program B is for athletes who were able to gain weight beyond its deficit (coefficient - from -5 to 5).

Program C is for athletes who have managed to build up their muscles (coefficient - more than 5).

I note that all three programs are for athletes with experience in training, for those who have completed training for beginners, as well as classical striking classes, after which they realized that they have a low ability for muscle hypertrophy. For beginning athletes, other training methods are needed.

Program G and program XXXL were obtained much later as a result of theoretical studies of training methods, physiology and muscle activity, etc., as well as practical testing not only on ourselves, but also on other volunteers

Training for men is usually based on the same principle: performing basic exercises and increasing muscle size. For the fair sex, the program is completely different. In training for girls, as a rule, some muscle groups are excluded altogether, and the main emphasis is on the buttocks and hamstrings.

      Answer

      Bodybuilding for hardgainers:

Fats are not a source of everything you need (but only energy), so the body will also use muscles. Moreover, energy sources tend to quickly recover and accumulate, as is the case with glycogen. This means that the fat lost as a result of training will be compensated for by new fat.

A little strange calculation If we take this table on Asthenics as a basis

For example, I am 185 cm tall, my weight was 75 kg, but I have lost weight to 69 kg. According to this table, this is the bare minimum. It immediately shows that a height of 185 kg should have a mass of 85 kg. This exceeds the norm according to the table by 10 kg, and this is the maximum for a large build. I understand that a large mass is good, but the site is still designed for Asthenics, and their mass is lower than that given in the site’s calculations.

    Answer

      Bodybuilding for hardgainers:

      07/26/2014 at 19:36

You show a table of the average height-to-weight ratio. Moreover, this table supposedly actually demonstrates a person’s build, and according to the logic of this table, changing body weight up/down leads to a change in build, which is fundamentally wrong. any asthenic person can increase their weight by more than a dozen kg, but at the same time their body structure, muscle structure and responsiveness of muscle tissue to exercise will remain asthenic. and most importantly, this table is nothing for people building muscle mass.

The calculation proposed here only guides a person which program he should choose at this stage of his physical development. The proposed body weight coefficient does not pretend to be an assessment of any norm for weight and height.

I killed the central nervous system - it was me who suffered from overtraining. I don’t feel like exercising, my weight is dropping, my mood is bad. It’s just that the centrally unequal system is tired and doesn’t want to train anymore. After the bench press, you can finish off your chest with a dumbbell bench press, dips or flyes. Apparently one bench press is not enough, so add a second exercise. You can do incline bench presses with barbells or dumbbells – 20, 30 degrees. And try to change your training program every 1-2 months. The body gets used to the stress and does not grow. I recently changed the program. Weight 64 now. But the most important thing is nutrition. I feel like I’m not eating enough calories, so I’m growing slowly.

I already feel stagnant, but how do I understand that the central nervous system is dead? I read the articles and see that I will die of boredom until the training day. Maybe this is the “death” of the central nervous system?)) I bench press 60 kg 4 sets to the end of my strength in each approach, in 1 approach I get 8 repetitions, then with each approach the repetitions drop. Early Years & the 'raison d'être'

18 best sports films based on real events

For the first few years of his life, Serge grew up in Guadeloupe, a small French island in the Caribbean. In 1950, however, at the age of 12, Serge and his family moved to France to further the future bodybuilder's education and development.

This is where it all started falling into place.

During his adolescence, Nubret discovered his talents for athletics, dominating in school sports and realized he had a future as an athlete.

In 1958, at the age of 20, Serge finished his studies and moved back to Guadeloupe with one goal in mind: to become a world champion bodybuilder. That very same year, he won his first Bodybuilder” competition 'Mr. Guadeloupe', but he had much more in mind.

During his time in France, Nubret had developed a passion for the sport, and believed it to be his “raison d'être” or in other words, his reason to live.

A young Serge Nubret.

World Champion & The IFBB

From 1960 onward, things started to happen fast for Nubret. He had 2 years of training, an incredible physique, and limitless ambition – it was time to take things to the next level.

That year he was accepted into the International Federation of Bodybuilders (IFBB) and declared World's Most Muscular Man within just months of membership, and his success just seemed to snowball – including many acting roles in several feature films.

By 1970, Serge was not only a dedicated member of the IFBB, but the head of the French and European arm of the federation – that was until 1975 where Nubret decided he didn’t like the way the federation was headed.

The 1975 Olympia Controversy

The 1975 Olympia was to be Arnold Schwarzenegger's last competition, and Serge Nubret was the biggest threat. He was believed to be bigger, stronger and more cut than anyone else in the industry at the time – and that worried the judges. For Arnold's last show, the rumor was they were willing to do anything to let him win.

Nubret was banned from entering the competition 2 weeks before it started. The reason the judges gave was due to his appearance in an erotic film that the federation didn't approve of. Crushed from the news, Nubret stopped training almost immediately, to stop the intense strain he was putting his body to be in that condition.

That was until the night before the contest, when the Federation reopened his application and allowed him to compete again – at which point Serge had already lost 14lbs of muscle.

This gave Arnold a clear advantage and secured his victory in the contest – with Serge still managing to come 2nd, beating Arnold's prime competitor Lou Ferrigno.

Serge's Side of 'Pumping Iron'

In the classic bodybuilding film 'Pumping Iron', Nubret is described as a 'last minute contestant', but in an interview with bodybuilding.com, Nubret tells a different story:

It definitely puts the events into a different light.

Life after the IFBB and the Formation of WABBA

Disenchanted with the IFBB, Serge gave up is position and went on to head up another Bodybuilding organization – the World Amateur Bodybuilding Association, or WABBA – with the intention of making sure competing athletes were continually given the support they need.

Nubret boycotted the IFBB for the rest of his career and went on to win multiple world championships in both the NABBA and the WABBA bodybuilding federations.

He remained active on these circuits all the way up to 1985 – that's 25 years on the stage. After finishing up his competitive career, Serge owned and managed his own gym in Paris and released his autobiography several years later in 2006.

He is still, to this day, has been the only bodybuilder in the world to hold six world titles with four different bodybuilding federations.

Up until his passing, Serge was still very active in bodybuilding forums. He was always available for diet and training tips, offering advice to his fans in 3 different languages over 15 different websites.

Exercises for losing weight on thighsLet's find out together

Serge Nubret and his training

I wrote a general review article

about this legendary athlete, film actor, writer, but many readers asked me to talk about his training complex, which I do with pleasure.

It is worth mentioning that Serge Nubret did not practice pumping training with maximum weights. And it was not “multiple repetitions”, as many people think about pumping.

The main thing in Nybre training is:

2. Rest between sets no more than 30 to 60 seconds

I will say right away that not everyone will have the same results as Nubre. Don't forget that training is only a third of success. The remaining 2/3 is rest and nutrition.

Without some component, progress in building muscle mass is not possible.

In addition, everyone has their own genetics. This system will work for some, and not for others. But you have to try, otherwise you won’t understand what “works” for you.

I can’t say anything about taking steroids, “I didn’t hold a candle,” but looking at his proportions and comparing them with the current “hams” with round bellies, I can say that if they were there, they were in minimal quantities.

I also wanted a quote from Nubre from 2007, where he talks about “working” scales.

What we can learn from Serge Nubret

Arguably, Serge lived the bodybuilder lifestyle harder than anyone else.

He was a big believer in never going heavy, but pushing yourself as hard as you can. Instead of focusing on the weight, you should focus on yourself.

Don't be intimidated or pressured into achieving the heaviest lift in the gym, instead, think about your form. Are you engaging with the muscle as well as you possibly can?

And this doesn't just apply to training – but also to how you live your life.

Whatever Serge did, he didn't care about the size of the achievement, but that it was done right. Winning (and running) the IFBB was a huge and heavy task, but as soon as comprises were being made and the federation's 'form' started to falter, Serge started from scratch and founded WABBA – making sure it every step was executed to pure perfection .

No matter how big or small, Serge taught us a task should always be done to the best of your ability. If you feel that standards are starting to slip, and you can't give it your all – take a step back until you can.

Athlete and leader

In the 1970s, Nubret finished third at the 1973 Olympia and second in 1975. Vice-President of IFBB Europe from to , Nyubra founded WABBE in 1976. He competed until 1984, winning his last WABBA world title that same year. He would compete on Gravelines again in 2003, during the World Championships, at the age of 65.

Additionally, Nubret was known for his unorthodox training method of performing high numbers of sets and reps with relatively light weights (which could amount to up to 5-6 hours a day, possibly split into two sessions), with a high frequency of requests for each group muscles. , a method therefore diametrically opposed to the Heavy Duty

, popularized by Mike Mentzer (low duration and frequency, very high loads), while most
bodybuilders
use training with intermediate characteristics (medium duration and frequency, medium loads). The "Nubret Method" is little used, requires a lot of training time, but is clearly effective and seems to allow the maintenance or even significant development of muscles in old age (besides Nubret himself, example "Edmund Karolevich, another French follower of this method, who maintained an impressive physique until he was sixty).

Nybre training

The weekly split looked like this:

  • Monday
    - chest, quadriceps
  • Tuesday
    - back, hamstrings
  • Wednesday
    - shoulders, arms
  • Thursday
    - chest, quadriceps
  • Friday
    - back, hamstrings
  • Saturday
    - shoulders, arms
  • Sunday
    is a day off

Abs workout every day. Not necessarily during the main workout, but the total number of repetitions reached up to 2000.

The weights are 50-60% of the one-rep maximum. If you can handle it easily, add weight.

The main thing is to go through the entire workout, without reducing either the number of approaches or the number of repetitions in the approach.

The main thing is to achieve a feeling of fullness in the muscle you are training. Don't have a complex about small scales. The “expansion” of the muscle is your main criterion.

And I also wanted to add that the advantage of this program is that you cannot get injured and you can more clearly monitor the exercise technique, which is also important.

Training

Serge was rented for his intensive, and unique training style. There was one method, and one method only: Reps. Lots and lots of reps.

Despite his enormous, thick build, Nubret didn't lift heavy – he found his body responded the best to light weights over a long duration of reps and sets.

In interviews, Nubret has claimed to train with 30, 40 or even 50 sets for some body parts (with the exception of only 16 sets for arms) that each consisted of 12 – 20 reps per set, with only 30 seconds rest between each. Workouts went on as long as they had to, with sessions lasting up to 5 hours at a time!

He was also famous for having one of the smallest waists in the business – Nubret claims the secret is one-straight hour of ab work every day: Starting with one long set of 2000 sit ups every morning.

biography

Serge Nubret spent his early years in Anse Bertrand, a town of 7,000 inhabitants north of Grande Terre (Guadeloupe). Until the age of 12, he led a life punctuated by outdoor games, and in 1950 he moved to Paris with his parents. Now living in Joinville-le-Pont, he continued his studies at high school before taking a commercial course. In adolescence and adolescence, he experiences his physical superiority over his comrades and gradually understands what he will call in his book of reflections “ I and God

“The meaning of existence,” that is, the fate of the champion assigned to him by God (in the work it is called “I am”). He returned to Guadeloupe in 1958 to avoid conscription for the Algerian War. It was then that he discovered bodybuilding, while simultaneously working as an accountant in his father’s company. His father, concerned about the smoothness of his professional life, does not encourage his son to play sports.

Serge Nubret is the father of three children: Pascal and Stanley from his first wife Regine, Karine from his second wife Jacqueline, a lawyer who was also involved in bodybuilding and won several women's titles.

In March 2009, Serge Nubret is found in a coma at his home and taken to the Lariboisiere Hospital. Therefore, doctors at this hospital are monitoring him. He died on April 19, 2011, in a nursing home in Pierfitte-sur-Seine in Seine-Saint-Denis.

Confrontation with Arnold

Serge Nubret got to Olympia at the last minute. He lost 5 kg of muscle in 12 days to get to the competition. His participation in the film “Pumping Iron” was also cut. He was only paid $200 and was featured in a couple of episodes at the end. Moreover, Serge turned out to be no worse than Arnold. Many fans believe that he should have won that Olympia.

Nubre was outraged by this injustice, called these competitions a “political struggle” and founded his own bodybuilding federation - WABBA. In 1976, he received the title of Mr. World and Mr. Olympus according to NABBA. In 1981 he became a champion in his own federation.

Serge Nubret, nicknamed the “Black Panther,” was an esthete from the golden era of bodybuilding and the main competitor of Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1975. Serge is a long-liver in bodybuilding; he has delighted his fans for 25 years in a row. And even at 65 he remained in excellent shape.

Main goal in life

Serge Nubret was born in 1938 in Guadeloupe. At the age of 12, he moved to the suburbs of Paris and became acquainted with training. He quickly received the first results and realized that he would do this all his life.

In his book “I am Me and God,” he wrote that the Almighty gave him the ability to train, so he made it the meaning of his life. Serge set his main goal in life to become a bodybuilding champion.

At the age of 20, Serge returns to his homeland, Guadeloupe, and wins a local tournament. This victory provides the opportunity to compete at the World Championships in Montreal, which Serge certainly took advantage of.

In total, he starred in 25 films and TV series.

Return

In 1969, Serge Nubret returned to competitive bodybuilding and became second at Mr. World. In 1972 and 1973 he stormed Olympia, but took only 3rd place. At that time, Arnold Schwarzenegger dominated the Olympia and no one managed to beat him.

In 1975, Serge again tries to defeat Arnold, but he was not even included in the lists. There is an opinion that they did not want to see him at Olympia because of the actor’s obscene filmography. Another version is that Vader did not approve of his performance due to his heavy weight.

In the Level 2 program, I recommend starting your workout with a warm-up on a Roman bench, one of my favorite exercises for trunk flexion. For the obliques, in addition to crunching movements, you'll find exercises like side bends and twist bends.

COMPETITION PREPARATION PROGRAM

When you reach the competition level, your goal is to develop definition and definition in all your abdominal muscles, not to increase their size and strength. To increase the intensity of your workout, start with a 10-minute warm-up on a Roman bench.

This kind of warm-up has always allowed me to achieve good results, like my contemporaries - Franco Colombo, Szabo Kozewski and Ken Waller.

Exercises on Roman benches warm up the muscles and create long-lasting tension that forces the abdominals to work from the beginning to the end of the movement.

The end product of a competition training program is the development of all muscles, and each of the exercises described below is designed to strengthen and shape a different part of your torso.

To create abs that will truly impress the judges, you'll need to do exercises for the upper and lower rectus abdominis, obliques and intercostals, as well as develop your lower back with hyperextensions and other lumbar exercises.

You will need enormous effort to gain complete muscle control. Keep trying, don't stop for a second, and you will achieve the desired result.
