TOP 5 sports books for current coaches
The most successful coaches from football to curling did not immediately become so invincible. Often the path was hellish and full of loud failures and merciless defeats.
I first learned about this from books, and now I learn from my own experience.
But every successful coach is an eternal student.
And today I want to give a brief overview of the sports books that have influenced me the most. Moreover, several people have already asked me to compile such a list of books.
So, I’ll immediately make a reservation that I gain knowledge for table tennis not directly, but by applying the experience of great coaches from other sports to my activities. This is how a homemade product is born in my head. I simply cannot copy someone.
So, the TOP 5 books that every coach who wants to achieve results in their chosen sport should read.
Coach's handbook
Author: Nikolai Georgievich Ozolin
This book is for you if you want to understand
- how to give training loads
- how to distribute loads over different periods
- how to work with the younger generation of different ages
- what training methods exist
- what training principles must be followed
- how to plan the training process from one lesson to the Olympic cycle
- how to get an athlete in perfect shape for competitions
The book has almost 1000 pages, but it is not necessary to read them all at once. You can access different sections at the right time.
Personally, I constantly turn to this book in order to more competently plan the training process as a whole and any individual training in table tennis, or to get an answer to a question that torments me, be it load, psychology, recovery for an athlete, or consolidation of technique.
The book is truly a reference book for every trainer.
And the most important thing is that it is not written in abstruse scientific language with a bunch of incomprehensible terms, but in simple human language, as if a more experienced friend is telling you something and giving practical advice.
By the way, if anyone doubts the level of Nikolai Georgievich Ozolin as a coach, then it is completely in vain. He produced two Olympic silver medalists in athletics in the triple jump. These are Leonid Shcherbakov (1952) and Oleg Fedossev (1964).
This book is sold in stores as well as online stores. If you look, you can find it.
Gymnastics is worthy of anthems
Author: Vladislav Stepanovich Rastorotsiky
Before reading this book, I was probably just a coach, but after reading it I began to turn into a teacher.
Vladislav Stepanovich trained Lyudmila Turishcheva, a multiple Olympic champion in artistic gymnastics, but in the book he tells through his story how he trained primarily individuals, and not just performers.
I would recommend reading this book to absolutely all coaches to look at raising children in sports from the perspective of a great person.
The ideas that he presents in the book were 50-60 years ahead of his time and, in my opinion, are even ahead of our time.
This book is not easy to get. You need to rummage through the websites of used bookstores. There may be photocopied versions on the Internet.
Endless match
Author: Valery Vasilievich Lobanovsky
I think that this man really doesn’t need to be introduced to men! Master of Soviet and Ukrainian football.
This book changed my views on table tennis strategy.
Here you can ask: “He coached football players, what does table tennis have to do with it?”
At the beginning of the article, I said that I was applying experience from other sports to table tennis and getting new conclusions, theories and interesting findings.
Valery Vasilyevich in the book talks about his vision of football strategy, principles that can be applied in all team sports. These principles are universal.
Lobanovsky had a very holistic view of his sport and this book allows you to look at table tennis with the same view.
So, if you want to stimulate your coaching (or sports) brain, be sure to find and read this book. A lot of new discoveries, primarily tactical and strategic, are guaranteed to you.
This book has been reprinted, so you can find it in online stores.
Get over yourself!
Author: Anatoly Vasilievich Alekseev
A training book by one of the best psychologists in Soviet and Russian sports.
It’s easy to learn and apply, and the effect of the classes that the author offers is simply colossal. By the way, tested from personal experience.
The book is very easy to read, because it is written in the simplest language and flavored with dozens of real stories from the sports life of great and not only athletes.
If you want to get your trainees into the best psychological state for competitions (or approach them yourself in such a state), and also make the training process more effective, then read this book!
The book, as far as I know, is still being republished, so look for it in online stores of sports publishing houses like Sovsport.
For what. Notes from a sports psychologist.
Author: Rudolf Maksimovich Zagainov
If you remember, Rudolf Zagainov psychologically prepared Alexei Yagudin for the 2002 Olympics. This was his last work with the stars.
The book is very strong.
Rudolf Maksimovich allows the reader to get inside the Olympic champions and world champions and try to try on their inner world, and also ask the question “What would I do in such a situation and how would I behave?”
This book will be very useful for coaches to understand where to lead athletes, how to be closer to them and what the result of joint work should be.
The book makes you think about very important things in sports.
The book is not very old, so I am sure that it can be found if you try hard enough.
In addition to these 5 books, I have read dozens of others. I read books by great athletes such as Pele, Maradonna, Michel Platini, Valery Borzov, Sergei Bubka, Valery Brumel, Alexey Yagudin, Nellie Kim, Lance Armstrong and others. And also great coaches such as Vladimir Dyachkov, Mikhail Yakushin, Konstantin Beskov, Vladimir Tarasov, Viktor Tikhonov, Vyacheslav Platonov, Alexander Gomelsky and many others.
Each of these authors taught me something and made me think about something, and it was hard for me to choose 5 books from this list, but I won’t write about every book I read, since our blog is not about books, but about table tennis.
But if you want to feed yourself new ideas and gain inspiration, then read books by great coaches and athletes. This is a real treasure trove of valuable sports information!

"Jose Mourinho. Up Close by Robert Beasley
litres.ru
Despite the relatively small amount of information about the coaching aspects of Jose Mourinho's work, the book is worth reading for anyone working in modern sports media.
The personality of Jose Mourinho is full of mysterious contradictions and interesting details, which Beasley describes in detail: frequent business trips, relationships with club employees, sporting experiences.
The author of the book and friend of Mourinho not only talks about his career from the beginning of his work at the English club Chelsea, but also touches on the non-football part of life - about his wife, children and father.
Arsene Wenger at Arsenal. Inside Story by John Cross

Arsene Wenger has been called a “revolutionary coach”: his methods completely changed the philosophy of Arsenal and the English Premier League.
Cross describes Wenger's coaching success and how quickly the phenomenon of attacking football gained momentum, which allowed Arsenal to gain the status of the most "exciting" club in England. Also in the book you can find out how the London team was created, the Frenchman’s secret approaches to the training process and other non-public stories of the club.
