But race walking was included in the group of Olympic sports only in 1904, and even then it was far in its technique from what many are accustomed to now. Walkers competed over short distances: 1500 m and 3000 m. Already in 1912, these values increased to 10 km, and the standard 50 km was established in the regulations only in 1932. It was decided to include the 20 km race in the program only in 1956.

And, it would seem, over such a long history of development and existence, race walking should have acquired specialized shoes that would help facilitate movement. But no. Special sneakers for race walking approximately appeared only in the mid-70s of the twentieth century. Until this significant moment, most used lightweight canvas shoes and rubberized sneakers with fabric uppers (before the Dassler era).
Then in 1920, the Dassler brothers introduced the world to spiked running shoes, which most athletes (not just walkers) used for training and competition. Already closer to the 40s of the twentieth century, companies began to slowly switch to the production of special shoes for each individual sport. Perhaps this is why in the 50s there was an increased love for light and practical shoes that would be suitable “for both the feast and the world...”.
For race walking, everything changed in the 1970s. Then Nike presented the world with their first “waffle iron” - a rubberized sole with a special tread that could replace classic spikes. In the same years, the Air Waffle Trainer was also released, which became a godsend not only for runners, but also for those who were involved in race walking, because such shoes made it much easier to move on harder surfaces and helped provide good shock absorption with a not too flexible sole.
