Popular actors have to change their appearance from one role to another. And often the art of make-up artists is not enough for this. Stars build their own bodies on their own, working out hard in the gym and following a strict diet. A clear example of this is the English actor Tom Hardy. Training for the film “The Dark Knight” helped him gain 10 kg of muscle mass and become a hero, ready to challenge Batman himself. The actor had to face similar challenges during preparation for other films. Thus, Tom Hardy’s training for the film “Warrior” allowed the actor to quickly turn into a real fighter, a representative of mixed martial arts.
A little about Tom Hardy
Tom grew up in a wealthy family, so in his youth he was spoiled
Tom Hardy is 44 years old. He was born into a family of English intellectuals in September 1977. Tom's father was a writer, his mother an artist. Since childhood, his parents tried to instill in their son a love of good literature and classical music, and to protect him from bad company.
However, the future actor, on the contrary, was indiscriminate in his choice of friends and in adolescence began to regularly get into various troubles. At age 15, he was expelled from school for his addiction to alcohol and drugs, and a year later he found himself behind bars for car theft. The arrest was short-lived. The young man was released thanks to his father’s connections and Tom’s promise to come to his senses.
Hardy’s passion for the stage helped him take the path of correction. The young man entered the London School of Drama and at the same time began working as a model. The aspiring artist received his first film role in the late 1990s. It was the series "Band of Brothers". Then Tom’s filmography began to rapidly expand, and leading roles began to appear in it. The actor often had to change images, playing characters completely different from each other.
At 21, Tom Hardy won the Breakfast's Find Me beauty contest. As a prize, the young man was paid a monetary reward and offered a contract with a modeling agency.
Among Hardy’s iconic works are roles in the films “Bronson”, “RocknRolla”, “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “The Revenant”. The film “Warrior”, in which the artist played the role of an MMA fighter, also became important for Tom. For this, he had to urgently get into shape, literally registering in the gym for 8 weeks.
Another role that required Hardy to seriously work on his body was the terrorist villain from the film about Bae. Especially for this film, the actor gained weight and learned to walk with 10-centimeter pads under his shoes so that in the frame he would be the same height as the bat-man.
Tom Hardy is 175 cm tall and weighs 76 kg.
Bane's image and biography
Bane is not only an incredibly strong character, but also a true genius. Such a successful combination of qualities allows us to talk about him as Batman’s most dangerous enemy.
His biography begins immediately with lifelong imprisonment on the island of Santa Prisca. Initially, the hero serves his sentence with his mother, but after her death he is left alone with the cruel reality. The prisoner not only has to improve physically, but also develop character in order to survive within the prison walls.

The boy read a lot of books, trained in the gym and practiced skirmishes with other prisoners. This played a role: the prisoner committed his first murder at the age of 8.
Little Bane never parted with his teddy bear. The guards did not pay attention to this, considering the toy a child's whim. However, the child used the soft friend as a container for sharpening, which immediately appeared in his hands if circumstances required it.
Cunning and the ability to survive made the guy a thunderstorm in “Penya Duro.” This state of affairs set him apart from other prisoners, which was the reason for his modification. The prison owners subjected the prisoner to an experiment during which they injected him with the dangerous drug Venom. All past test subjects failed to cope with the chemical reaction and died.
True, the incredible power that Bane received from Venom came with a drug addiction. The villain was forced to take another dose twice a day, otherwise he experienced pain reminiscent of withdrawal symptoms.

Batman and Bane
Having assembled a team - Bird, Zombie and Trogg - the prisoner managed to escape from Pena Duro. His gaze turned to Gotham, as it was associated with a prison due to Batman's strong authority. In addition, since childhood, Bane has had terrible dreams in which a demonic mouse was present.
In the hero’s phrases there are often reflections that only complete despair taught him not to be afraid of the darkness. He then associated himself with her. Addressing his comrades in misfortune, the man borrowed quotes from great revolutionaries, calling on the prisoners to liberate the oppressed.
The beginning of the operation was marked by the fact that a former prisoner destroyed Arkham, releasing mentally ill patients - Two-Face, the Ventriloquist, the Joker and others. Batman had to work without rest to restore order in Gotham. The Dark Knight weakened, which the evil genius took advantage of. It was not difficult for him to fight against the main defender of the city and make him a helpless paralytic.
Azrael took the place of Batman in the person of Jean-Paul Valli. Unlike Bruce Wayne, the hero demonstrated cruelty in his methods of fighting crime. Raised as a top-class killer, he appeared in a new combat suit and managed to defeat the enemy. Valli tore off the mask and tube through which Bane pumped Venom, and then beat him to a pulp.

Batman and Bane
However, the monster's story did not end there. He went to jail again, and in prison he was able not only to overcome his drug addiction, but also to radically change his views. After escaping, the man returned to Gotham and offered to help Batman. So later he stopped the turnover of “Venom” on the streets of the city.
Throughout his life, Bane wondered about his father. About the person because of whom I was forced to endure imprisonment from an early age. To find him, the villain went to Santa Prisca, where he met with a spiritual mentor from prison. The priest pointed out to him four candidates for the role of his father.
In search of the truth, the anti-hero meets the terrorist Rasu al Ghul. The villain earns Bane's respect, and he decides to join a criminal gang. Together, the criminals create an epidemic in Gotham with the goal of shaking the established order. Bruce Wayne, stronger by then, strikes back and defeats Bane.
In the future, fights took place between him and Batman more than once, but ended in a draw. The antihero managed to try himself in different roles. So, he was a government agent, was a member of various groups - the Secret Six, the Suicide Squad and even the Secret Society of Super-Villains.
The terrifying character was tall - 203 cm - and weighed 159 kg. He was depicted with a mask on his face and demonstrated not only strength, but also speed. Moreover, his physical abilities did not decrease even after Fr. For example, he broke the bones of Killer Croc without a “dose.”

The hero’s stamina was fueled by injections; while taking the drug, he survived at critical temperatures and extreme pressure. Bane fell from a height and survived even after being attacked. Rapid regeneration ensured his immortality, but the greater the damage, the more drug was required. Exceeding the dose threatened the character with insanity.
But the man had abilities that did not depend on Venom. These include intelligence, photographic memory and erudition. He owes all this only to the fact that he devoted a lot of time to books and self-education. For example, Bane studied 14 languages, including secret ones.
He was also fluent in martial arts, and created some of them himself. But all this would be useless if Bane was not an excellent strategist and tactician. Blind power would not allow him to outwit Batman and become Gotham's most dangerous villain. In various film adaptations, the characterization of the hero differed significantly from what was presented in the comics.
Training program
The actor's full name is Edward Thomas Hardy.
Tom Hardy's training program includes choreography and jiu-jitsu. They help strengthen and improve the actor’s body along with other exercises.
"Warrior"
Hardy and his partner Joel Edgerton trained with real MMA fighters
In preparation for filming the film “Warrior,” the actor was faced with the task of “drying out” his body and improving muscle definition. Together with his trainer Patrick Monroe, the actor developed a special training program that included martial arts such as boxing, Muay Thai and kickboxing. The training process took place four days a week. The classes lasted six hours.
Tom Hardy often alternated with training on simulators and numerous exercises with his own weight.
Tom started the first day with a bench press. After that, he moved on to dumbbell presses, deadlifts and dumbbell flyes. Hardy performed three sets of 10–15 exercises each. Also, the first training day contained pull-ups (3 sets to the maximum) and abdominal exercises (4 sets to a full burning sensation).
On the second day, Hardy began doing barbell exercises. First there were squats, then lunges and calf raises with a barbell. In total, the actor performed three approaches, including up to 10 performances of each exercise. Next, Tom did a similar number of approaches to the “Hyperextension” exercise, barbell curls, dips and leg raises to the bar.
Tom Hardy gained 12 kg of muscle mass for the role
On the third day, the actor’s training program included bent-over barbell rows and barbell rows to the chin, lifting dumbbells in front of you, pull-ups on the bar and abdominal exercises. There were 10–15 repetitions in 3 sets. At the same time, it was necessary to do pull-ups as many times as possible, and perform abdominal exercises until the burning sensation was complete.
On the fourth day of training, Tom Hardy performed a leg press, front squats, dumbbell curls, a deadlift exercise, and a close-grip bench press. Each element was performed in three approaches, 15 times each.
In addition to acting in films, Tom Hardy also plays in the theater.
"The Dark Knight Rises"
As a child, Hardy was a fan of Batman, so the fight scene with his idol was difficult for him
In order to transform into the villain Bane, Tom needed to increase an additional 15 kg of mass in a short time. Details of the actor’s activities are kept secret. However, it can be assumed that Tom trained according to the 5 on 5 system.
It involves performing five sets of 5 repetitions per set. The breaks between approaches were quite long - from 2 to 4 minutes.
In 3 months, the actor gained 15 kg of muscle mass
Exhausting training took place three times a week. Tom devoted the rest of his days to recovery. The only sports activities allowed at this time were yoga and Pilates - even running and playing football were completely excluded.
The basic exercises included in the program:
- squats;
- deadlift;
- military bench press and standing press.
The peculiarity of Tom Hardy's training was that he alternated squats and deadlifts, while all other exercises were performed without fail every time.
How to train trapezius and deltoids
Tom Hardy pumped up his muscles for the filming of the film
To pump up the trapezius muscles and deltoids, you need a set of strength training with a barbell or dumbbells . The trapezius is the area of the back where the vastus muscles connect to the neck and deltoids. The complex should include exercises that will work all parts of the muscles: upper, middle and lower. This is how you can create a harmonious, athletic figure.
It is very important that the complex includes exercises for all three parts, otherwise muscle mass will be gained unevenly
For quick results, it is better to work out in the gym. You can pump up your trapezius and deltoids at home, but only if you have equipment for strength exercises.
Nutrition program
In 2011, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts recognized the man as the most promising star.
The actor’s nutrition before filming each of the films was supposed to contribute to the rapid growth of high-quality muscles without any fat deposits. The actor admits that this made his diet too monotonous. Moreover, after finishing working on the films, Tom could no longer look at some products without shuddering.
"Warrior"
The actor used BCAA as sports supplements, both during the day and during training.
On the eve of filming this film, Tom Hardy went on a low-carbohydrate diet. All food consumed was divided into 5–6 meals. The menu was based on chicken and broccoli. The diet did not involve going beyond 3,500 calories per day and implied an unconditional ban on any fast food and empty calories.
In addition, the actor took proteins as sports supplements throughout the day, and amino acids (BCAAs) during training. This made it possible to increase the effectiveness of the training and gain 12 kg of muscle mass during the training, and reduce fat to a minimum.
If before the start of training Tom’s weight was 73 kg, then at the end of the course Hardy already weighed all 86 kg. The set goal was achieved. The artist appeared on the screens with a spectacular figure that any fighter could envy.
"The Dark Knight"
Tom did not follow a special diet in preparation for the film - he simply ate a lot of protein foods, limiting carbohydrates
The nutrition program before filming was high in calories with a slight restriction of carbohydrates. The basis of the diet with a daily calorie intake of 3210–3500 included:
- rice;
- chicken,
- protein shakes.
“I ate as much as I could fit,” Tom admitted in an interview after the premiere of the film. Although the actor added that the food was not always exclusively healthy. Sometimes the actor allowed himself to enjoy ice cream or could eat a large pizza alone.
Hannibal Lecter (Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal)
This mask was put on Dr. Hannibal Lecter in prison to prevent him from biting, otherwise bad things would happen.
As Thomas Harris writes in his novel The Silence of the Lambs, one day a nurse leaned over him during an examination. “He did this to her...” Chilton handed Clarice a tattered photograph. “The doctors managed to save her vision - only one eye. All this time the sensors were not disconnected - the cardiogram was taken. He broke her jaw, getting to her tongue. And his pulse remained normal, no higher than eighty-five, even when he swallowed her tongue.”
According to the film “Hannibal”, the mask was then considered the most valuable artifact; She was bought for $250,000 from a prison employee by billionaire Mason Verger, who also had an affair with Hannibal, was disfigured by him and has since become somewhat obsessed with him.
Darth Vader (Star Wars)
Intergalactic mega-villain, formerly a young Jedi named Anakin Skywalker. The helmet mask allows Vader to breathe - albeit in a very raspy and very ominous way. In the third film of the original trilogy, Return of the Jedi, he throws off his helmet to reveal a mutilated, burned man underneath. To tell how exactly he received these injuries and why he has such difficulty breathing, George Lucas filmed another trilogy: it describes Anakin's childhood, adolescence and apprenticeship, as well as his transition to the seductive Dark Side of the Force. At the same time, it turns out that poor Dart doesn’t even have limbs.
Jason (Friday the 13th)
One of the most famous maniacs in the history of cinema - he killed about 700 people! In short, this is a young man with a disfigured face due to a congenital disease. In the first film, everyone thinks that he drowned as a child in a lake near the Crystal Lake summer camp (the murders were committed by his distraught mother).
In the second, it turns out that Jason Voorhees did not drown, but lived in the forest; he again wets everyone who approached Crystal Lake, but hides his face behind the bag. And only in the third film does he find a hockey mask, without which his image is now unimaginable. The model used was a Detroit Red Wings goalie mask. They just painted it differently and punched additional holes.
Training for the film "The Dark Knight"
During the three months of preparation for the filming of The Dark Knight Rises, Tom increased his weight by 15 kg, again returning to the size and volume familiar from the film Warrior.
His personal trainer, as always, was Patrick P-nut Monroe. Many publications publish variations of the program for this film, but it was not officially presented. Most sources agree that the training was based on the principles of the basic program, or more precisely, one of its variations - the “5 x 5” program.
Spider-Man
Peter Parker, a teenager from Queens who was bitten by a radioactive spider and gained superpowers, appeared in Marvel comics in 1962. He can crawl along walls, throw out webs as strong as a cable from his wrists, and fly on them. The mask is an integral part of the red and blue suit that covers Peter completely, from head to toe. He has already been played by three actors in films: Tobey Maguire (2002 - 2007), Andy Garfield (2012 - 2014) and Tom Holland (from 2016 to the present).
V ("V for Vendetta")
An adaptation of the graphic novel by the famous English artist Alan Moore. Britain, late 2030s. A fascist party has come to power, all human freedoms are suppressed, many books are banned, and censorship reigns on television. V is a romantic anarchist hero who single-handedly fights power and undermines the buildings that symbolize it. On his face is a mask depicting Guy Fawkes, the head of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, and his body is hidden in black robes. This masquerade is due, among other things, to the fact that his body and face are, in all likelihood, disfigured: presumably, V received terrible burns during a fire in the concentration camp where he was kept. After the release of the film, the V mask was happily used by hackers from the Anonymous group and protesters of all stripes.
Deadpool
Another Marvel comics hero. His costume is reminiscent of Spider-Man's, but as a character he is almost 30 years younger (Deadpool made his debut on paper only in 1991). Moreover, under the suit hides not a kind, naive teenager, but a seasoned mercenary, Wade Wilson. Initially, Deadpool in the comics was a supervillain, but a few years later he became an anti-hero - that is, a complex, not very pleasant character who does not stand on the side of good.
Deadpool first appeared on screen in 2009 in the film X-Men: Origins. Wolverine,” he was played by Ryan Reynolds. He flashed somewhere in the background, and in the finale he changed (now his name was “Weapon XI”) and fought with the title character. All this was very unsuccessful, and in 2022 a separate film about Deadpool appeared, which was a huge success: Reynolds played him again.
