How to measure your figure
Correct measurement is perhaps the most crucial moment, because the data obtained will determine how correctly the size can be determined. The task is especially difficult if the figure does not have clearly defined lines and transitions, plus you have to measure yourself.
Therefore, it is best to ask a friend or loved one to help with measurements. In addition, you will need:
- Tailor's tape (“centimeter”).
- Pencil and notepad for notes.
- Soft ribbon or lace (to mark the waist).
To achieve the greatest accuracy, measurements should be taken on underwear, and not on clothing or a naked body. It is desirable that things fit snugly, but do not pinch the figure. Women are advised to wear a regular bra - without foam inserts or underwires.
Advice! If you don’t know or don’t want to take measurements, you can contact the studio workers. Professional cutters will be able to most accurately determine the size of clothing.
When taking measurements, you need to stand freely, in your usual position. Do not pull in your stomach too much, arch, slouch or straighten your shoulders. Otherwise, the readings will be taken with errors, and the clothes will not fit as desired.
What to prepare for correct measurement?
Body measurements, the table of which is kept periodically, are recommended to be taken early in the morning, before physical activity and, especially, breakfast. Only in this case will the body be clean, which will eliminate large errors in the data.
But evening measurements are not plausible, since weight will be affected by the water and food that a person consumed during the current day. Even despite strict diets, unexpected swelling may appear during the day, which will affect your readings.
To take measurements you will need to prepare:
- a mirror in which you need to see yourself in full height;
- a piece of paper or notebook with a table where the necessary data will be entered;
- floor scales, preferably with minimal error;
- meter, soft but not elastic, for measuring volumes.
Weighing
Weight control is an extremely important indicator. It is recommended to step on the scale on an empty stomach. In order for the scale to show a real result, it is necessary that both feet stand in the central part of the measuring device. You should not lean on any objects, or hold anything in your hands. It is not recommended to weigh yourself with a wet head. A minimum amount of clothing should be worn, ideally only underwear.
Body measurements
Body measurements must record changes in the volumes of body parts for the purpose of recording the results in a control chart.
To obtain accurate information, you need to measure the following parameters:
- shoulder girdle;
- the forearms of each hand;
- wrists;
- volume of each shin;
- volume of each ankle;
- hips above the knee;
If the condition of the body is generally satisfactory, but there are some problem areas, you can focus only on them.
Determine clothing size for men
To find out your parameters, you will need to measure:
- Neck circumference (NC): carried out at the base of the neck - at the level of the 7th vertebra in the back and the jugular cavity in the front (V-shaped fossa). The centimeter should be adjacent to the skin with an indentation of 1-2 fingers.
- Chest circumference (CG): wrap the body with tape, passing it under the arms along the most convex points.
- Waist circumference (WT): fix the auxiliary cord at the narrowest point or in the navel area (in the absence of a pronounced waist). Measure with tape.
- Hip circumference (H): circle the tape along the protruding places of the buttocks, holding it strictly horizontally.
- Sleeve length (SL): the value is not constant, as it depends on the style of the product. Long sleeve measurements are taken from the junction of the shoulder and arm to the wrist. In this case, the arm of the man being measured should be slightly bent. Tailor's tape is applied along the outside of the arm.
- Product length (DI): To determine the size of pants or trousers, measurements will be taken on the inside and outside of the leg. In the first case, the measurement is taken from the groin area (the point where the seams intersect) to the bottom edge of the product. The second measurement is taken by applying tape from the waist to the bottom along the outer surface.
- Back width (BW): from the axillary corners to the protruding points.
After taking your measurements, it’s quite easy to figure out what size you are. To do this, you need to round the resulting numbers to a whole value and compare them with the numbers in the table. It is important to remember:
- if you focus on a smaller number, then the clothes will fit tighter than the product selected according to parameters rounded up;
- When choosing a size, you should be guided by the indicators obtained during measurement, and not by what is indicated on the tag of the clothes that are actively being worn at that moment

Important! The measuring tape should not be pulled too tightly on the body. You should also avoid sagging.
The Russian sizing system differs from the foreign one. To calculate your parameter, you need to compare the values using the manufacturer’s grid or the standard grid.

How to correctly take body measurements when losing weight using a caliper?
If someone who is losing weight managed to purchase a caliper for measuring subcutaneous fat, then they will make their task much easier.
All that remains is to figure out how to use it:
- You need to take the device in your hands and wipe it well with Miramistin, Chlorhexidine or hydrogen peroxide.
- Then a piece of skin is taken between the shoulder and elbow joints of the back of the arm.
- The caliper needs to be grabbed by an area of skin.
- The divisions at the bottom are read. The indicator at the level at which the right side of the clipper grips the skin is an indicator of the subcutaneous fat content.
The exact same procedure is performed on the biceps, which is located between the shoulder and elbow joints on the front side of the arm. Subcutaneous fat is measured in the area of the shoulder blade at an angle of 45-50°. The same operation is performed on the waist 10 cm to the right or left of the navel.
Body measurements for weight loss can be performed with a special device - a caliper.
All four values must be added up and the required number must be found using a special table designed for the clipper. When making calculations, it is important to take into account gender and age.
