Existing federations in powerlifting and their standards

Published on August 5, 2011 in the category Standards

Today’s article will be of interest to those gym goers who strive to develop superhuman strength and are not particularly interested in the shape and relief of their muscles. I'm talking about lifters who train primarily 3 exercises (squats, bench presses, and deadlifts) during training and rarely do anything else (the rest of the exercises are called "auxiliary" exercises in lifting lingo).

An attempt to somehow classify “lifting” federations turned out to be not easy, so I had to resort to the help of Wikipedia. According to her data, there are 5 powerlifting federations in Russia. In each of the regions of our vast homeland there are representations, usually of one of the 5 represented federations.

IPF Federation

One might say that it is the most prestigious federation, but its qualifications are rumored to be listed abroad. It’s better not to say anything about their official website, unless of course that’s what I found. This is a very poor creation made in html. It’s good that there are regional websites where you can view current standards.

All exercises are performed in special equipment, which gives some increase to your results. This equipment is not cheap and is specially selected. For world champions it is usually made to order. Each federation has its own equipment T-shirts, bandages, etc. that are “allowed” for competitions. Although most often I met the company inzer on athletes.

Federation Union of Powerlifters of Russia

Founded in 2014 by Sergei Dluzhnevsky, who has already been written about on our website. In Russia, the federation represents the interests of other international organizations - these are WRPF (World RAW Powerlifting Federation), WEPF (World Equipped Powerlifting Federation), GPA (Global Powerlifting Alliance), IPL (International Powerlifting League) and IPO (International Powerlifting Organization). At the Powerlifters Union tournaments, athletes from 8 districts of Russia, 50 regions and 85 cities took part. The Federation holds tournaments not only in powerlifting and its individual movements, but also in quite rare competitions for foreign countries - bench press combined and folk bench press. On the official website you can find information about upcoming competitions and take part in them. Since there are quite a lot of nominations in which you can participate, there are also corresponding standards, so here you can see the standards for powerlifting without equipment, the rest can be found on the official website in the corresponding section.

Good afternoon dear friends!

We invite you to look back at the past year 2019 and plunge into the enchanting world of numbers not only on the scoreboard, but also statistical data on federations representing iron sport in our country and abroad.

The information presented to your attention is for informational purposes only, the nature of what is presented is objective, the authors rely only on specific figures.

In Russia at the moment there are a certain number of international organizations that have representative offices in our country, representing independent powerlifting, as well as one (FPR/IPF), accredited by the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation.

Based on modern realities, as well as the fact that some functionaries have received affiliation from several federations at once, it is possible and necessary to specifically consider not each organization in Russia separately, but together. Thus, a clearer picture of what is happening emerges (applicable to the largest players at the moment - February 2022)

FPR (IPF) - President Gennady Khodosevich Year of creation of the IPF: 1972 (48 years). FPR is the only federation that has a state. accreditation, the competition program includes exclusively powerlifting and bench press, 82 regional branches in the constituent entities of the Russian Federation, in Russia in 2019 there are 45 tournaments on the calendar, the number of all-time records in Russia: 74 records; WPC-Russia (WPC)/ GPC-Russia (GPC)/ WPA-Russia (WPA) - President Yuri Ustinov Year of creation of WPC - 1982 (38 years), year of creation of GPC: 2002 (17 years), year of creation WPA - 1987 (age 33)

Based on an independent survey conducted in 2022 among clients (and this is the target audience of any sports organizations) of the Fitness Territory network of fitness clubs (a federal network of clubs that has been operating in the Russian fitness services market in the business segment since 2010, has managed to establish itself as one of the most successful and largest fitness projects, representative offices: Moscow and the Moscow region, Samara, Krasnodar, Cheboksary, Lipetsk and Kursk, the number of clients is more than 60,000, by 2022 it is planned to open more than 100 new clubs), only: 17 % of respondents know what powerlifting is, 9% - extreme strength, 6% - armlifting, 3% - streetlifting. *For reference: bodybuilding – more than 80%, fitness bikini and men’s physics – about 30%.

Of the representatives of the iron world, the vast majority of respondents (more than 80%) mentioned the names: - Arnold Schwarzenegger (bodybuilding), - Hafthor Bjornson (extreme strength, powerlifting) - 32%, more due to the fact that the athlete played a role in the series “Game of Thrones” "

From Russia, the most frequently mentioned were: - Dmitry Golubochkin - 21% (bodybuilding), - Ekaterina Usmanova - 18% (fitness bikini), - Kirill Sarychev - 11% (powerlifting, president of WRPF/WEPF/WAF/WSF), - Yuri Belkin – 5% (powerlifting).

Based on dry statistical information, powerlifting in Russia is still a sport for a very small group of like-minded people and needs information and financial support in order to receive further development.

WPC-WPO Federation

In this federation there are as many as 3 internal “subspecies,” so to speak. The WPC itself, in which taking any drugs is allowed, also has a gradation into an equipped and unequipped division. Then there is the GPC federation in which athletes compete exclusively in powerlifting and without equipment. There is also AWPC, I wrote about it earlier. The AWPC has mandatory doping control, and accordingly, the standards there are earthly.

In this federation, there are special regulations for a suit and items of personal equipment, which even includes underpants and socks.:) I personally haven’t let it out at competitions, and somehow it doesn’t work yet, but it seems to me that this is too much...

AWPC

is the doping-free branch of the WPC. For doping - lifelong disqualification.

Federation RDFPF

The Federation is a representative of the international lifting federation WDFPF, headquartered in St. Petersburg. Doping control is carried out in the same way as in the AWPC.

I don’t know exactly how it differs from others, except for mandatory doping control, but as they say, it’s good when you have a choice.

IPA Federation

This federation began to function only in 2011; it is the official representative of the international federation International Powerlifting Association (IPA). There are 2 branches in the federation - one tests for doping (IPA-A), the other does not (IPA). You can also perform with or without equipment.

Also, in the IPA federations, competitions are held only in the bench press, both with and without equipment.

WPA Federation

This federation is also very young and represents the international powerlifting federation World Powerlifting Alliance (WPA) in Russia. It is also possible to compete in powerlifting both with and without equipment, in the bench press, with and without doping control. Since the federation is very young (it has existed since 2010) and has so far only held one bench press competition in which 24 athletes participated, I see no point in posting their standards on the website. Moreover, this year they have not yet been able to organize a championship and it has been postponed to November-December.

Here is such a voluminous article that I learned. Of course, you can’t cover all of powerlifting in one article, so I will develop this topic.

At the end of the article, I suggest you look at the current European bench press record holder - Laszlo Mežaros, who bench presses 302.5 kilograms without equipment.

AWPC standards (Russia)

*Starting from 2012, new discharge standards have been introduced in the AWPC category: division into single-layer and multi-layer equipment. Each category has its own regulatory requirements.
