Sports and physical activity are associated with an increased risk of injury. They happen most often when the rules for using equipment are violated, or when exercises are performed incorrectly in physical education lessons. The health of students is guaranteed by teachers with pedagogical education. They are required to provide regular instruction and require students to follow safety rules in the gym. The administration of the educational and sports complex provides equipment for classes and monitors compliance with the teacher’s labor protection requirements.
Basic rules of conduct and safety
During physical education, athletes' bodies experience increased stress. The coach and teacher must monitor the physical condition of the students. The priority is to develop physical skills while fully guaranteeing the safety of activities.
When working out in the gym you need to follow safety rules
General rules for conducting a lesson or training:
- doctor's clearance for students;
- availability of locker rooms for boys and girls;
- preparing the hall and equipment for classes;
- meeting the requirements for lighting and ventilation of the room;
- instructing students on safety precautions;
- compliance with sports uniforms and shoes according to the season;
- safety of valuable items and things involved.
Elementary rules can be supplemented with special requirements that take into account the specifics of the activity. In addition, during classes you cannot use mobile phones and other gadgets, chew gum, or use sports equipment without the teacher’s permission.
Important! If there is a strong difference in the preparation of students, it is possible to divide the class into several groups. In some cases, individual lessons and transfers to specialized training are allowed.
Occupational safety instructions for teachers in the gym
An educational or sports organization establishes internal rules for the routine and mode of training. However, the internal document must comply with the requirements of SanPin 2.4.2821-10, which stipulates the sanitary and epidemiological conditions for organizing training and the Labor Code of the Russian Federation.
The teacher must:
- know and be able to prevent dangerous situations and factors when performing their duties;
- comply with safety requirements when operating electrical appliances;
- be able to use fire extinguishing equipment;
- have practical skills in providing first aid to victims;
- promptly inform the school administration about breakdowns of general and sports equipment, building structures, and utilities;
- comply with the operating hours and internal regulations of the organization prescribed by law.
The teacher must have access to a first aid kit and follow safety precautions when using medications. If necessary, he delivers the victim to the nearest point of qualified assistance. Classes can only be carried out in special clothing. It is important to be able to use all the sports equipment in the gym.
To make physical education lessons safe, the gym needs to be prepared
Failure to comply with labor safety rules is punishable administratively. In case of accidents, criminal prosecution is possible.
Safety precautions in physical education lessons after classes
At the end of classes, the teacher must take measures to bring the hall into proper order. You need to do the following:
- remove sports equipment to storage areas;
- ensure ventilation of the room;
- restore the equipment to its original condition;
- bring equipment from the street into the hall if classes were held outdoors;
- change clothes, take a shower if necessary, wash;
- turn off electrical appliances and lighting;
Important! When holding competitions and tournaments, it is necessary to organize the reception of guests, provide them with equal conditions, an optimal training regimen and preparation. It is necessary to guarantee safe accommodation or arrange transportation to the hotel and back.
Fire safety in the gym
Classes are held in specially prepared premises that meet the requirements of supervisory authorities. Regular inspections by fire safety inspectors guarantee the safety of schoolchildren and students. The set of measures to meet these requirements includes:
- equipping premises with emergency evacuation exits;
- installation of fire extinguishing systems;
- instructing the actions of teachers and students in the event of situations dangerous to health and life.
The work is carried out with the participation of fire safety inspectors. A person in charge is appointed whose responsibilities include regularly checking the functionality of the extinguishing systems and the possibility of unhindered evacuation in extreme conditions.

Safety rules in the gym
Safety rules for a physical education lesson
The presence of equipment imposes additional responsibility. The coach must ensure that the athlete knows how to use the equipment. When a new student arrives, general instruction is given. After which the teacher must make sure that the safety precautions in the gym will be followed by the athlete.
Exercises in the gym must be supervised by a trainer.
If the student does not understand the requirements or does not comply with them, the coach removes the student from classes. During the exercises, the instructor controls the load, helps to set up the equipment correctly, explains the features of its use and gives general instructions on recommended modes.
Important! For fitness classes, original devices are often used, the nuances of which the trainer should know well.
Safety Tips for Strength Equipment[edit | edit code]
One of the marketing arguments for strength machines is that they are safer than free weights. And it’s true - when working with them, you don’t have to worry about being crushed by a 45 kg barbell. How do machines create a safe environment for their users? They place your body in the correct position and guide the movements you perform. But even then, you can get injured if you are not careful enough.
To avoid injury to yourself (and others), follow these safety guidelines.
- Customize each car to suit you.
Some machines require one simple adjustment, such as seat height. Others - two or more changes. In particular, with the leg raiser version of the machine, you need to adjust the backrest of the seat as well as the leg rests. Don't worry, you don't have to get a mechanic's license to customize these machines. Typically, you just need to pull the pin out of its socket, raise or lower the seat to the desired height, and then secure it with the pin again. Certain types of machines are very easy to adjust, even without the use of metal pins. With practice, fitting the equipment will become second nature to you.
Don't be lazy to make the necessary adjustments. Using a weight machine that is not designed for your body is like driving a car while sitting in the back seat: uncomfortable and very risky. When you reach to reach for a handle or sit with your knees tucked to your chest, you risk overstretching a muscle or tearing a ligament. Therefore, you should definitely first adjust the seat and rock on it to make sure it is securely fastened. You don't want the seat to suddenly sink all the way to the floor when you lift heavy weights on it.
- Watch your fingers.
From time to time, weights on a weight machine can get stuck in the air. But do not try to correct the situation yourself by pressing on the slabs or lifting them up. Instead, ask staff for help straight away.
We once saw a gym goer try to finish the load himself. A stack of heavy slabs crashed down, literally crushing his fingers as if between a hammer and an anvil. We have seen more than once other people who had strands of their hair pinched, and one guy even managed to get his genitals pinched. We don’t know the details, and we don’t want to know, but we heard this story with our own ears from a trustworthy exercise equipment salesman who witnessed it.
- Buckle up.
If the machine has a safety belt, use it. He is there for a reason! These belts prevent you from wasting unnecessary muscle strength trying to stay in place by moving a lever or tightening a bar. Most commonly, harnesses are found on older machines for seated leg curls, inner and outer thigh curls, triceps curls, and a few other models.
- Don't invent new uses for exercise equipment.
You wouldn't wash the floors of your house with your favorite sweater, right? You also won't use the TV as a step to reach the top of the buffet. So the machine for developing the pectoral muscles does not need to be used to strengthen your legs.
People are constantly inventing new - unsafe - options for using strength training equipment. For example, to make it easier to do chest exercises, some people also start pushing the levers with their legs. We've even seen people ignore their pecs altogether and use this machine to develop their arms or thighs. Meanwhile, by coming up with the wrong thing, you are asking for injury.
At the lesson
- Children can enter the gym and use equipment only with the permission of the teacher. When practicing outdoors, the class leaves the school only when accompanied by a coach.
- The equipment must be in good working order. It is necessary to treat the wall bars, mats, and other property with care. Hanging on the gate is prohibited. Basketball backboards, rope, and other equipment are used only for their intended purpose.
- You are allowed to use school equipment only if it is in working order.
- Junior and senior schoolchildren are required to comply with all the requirements of the teacher, be aware of the basic rules of the game, and behavior on the playground.
- During the lesson, each student must not be distracted and not distract his comrades from the process, provide access to equipment to other students, and put it in the proper place.
- If an injury occurs or someone is noticed to be unwell, the teacher must be notified immediately.
- Guys should try not to injure each other and control the use of sports equipment. It is allowed to perform exercises only at the command of a senior.
- Children excused from classes provide the teacher with an appropriate medical certificate and remain in the hall during the lesson.

Rules of conduct on the sports ground
When carrying out activities in special outdoor areas, compliance with certain rules is also required. Such actions are associated with an increase in the level of mobility of citizens and a decrease in control on the part of teaching staff, which, accordingly, can lead to injury. Students must strictly follow the teacher’s commands during actions, not violate the integrity of the equipment, and not use it against their classmates or other citizens.
Safety precautions in the pool: rules and SanPin
In addition, when going to such a site, students must go in a centralized group, just as when leaving the hall. In some cases, when there are difficult and dangerous situations, special training activities are carried out with high school students and students make notes in the journal for recording the rules of practice techniques.
In case of violation of such rules, the teacher will not be held liable for harm to health, but only if the student reaches the age of 16 years. In addition, on the sports ground it is prohibited to use sports objects for other purposes, cause injuries to other teenagers and children, or render these objects unusable.
Note! It is forbidden to eat food, drink water with the knowledge of a teacher, and leave the hall or area where events are taking place.
