11 cool films about weight loss (will give you strong motivation)

I usually don't watch TV. This is not a position of principle, but a lack of time or something. Well, we don’t intersect in space. In the morning, I almost immediately run to the gym, just before I have time to make coffee. In the evening I mostly read. On weekends I try not to hang around the house hugging a sofa cushion. But then, you know, a couple of work links arrived. As usual, Sergei Agapkin’s diet, Akhtarova’s diet and the film “Thinness”. But what to do, the people demand. To be honest, my short hair now stands on end without any gel. Should I start watching TV instead of doing exercises with a hairdryer?

Today I learned:

It turns out, judging by the NTV channel’s programs, everyone who tries to do fitness to lose weight is a freak. You have to go on a diet. It is advisable that you don’t eat after three o’clock in the afternoon. Guys, I practice IF, and I can say that the method is effective, but it is not suitable for beginners who would like to get rid of bad habits. Gets hung up on the process, you know. As a result, the client turns from a normal and cheerful person into a diet maniac with a stopwatch so as not to miss the notorious three hours. And it’s not a fact that he will lose weight faster than a person who has gently weaned himself from, excuse me, eating bucketloads.

Also, while you are on a diet, you cannot exclude any foods. But what to do is also unknown. You have to watch your diet. How to monitor is also unclear. The main thing is not to take pills. The names of the pills and the stories of women who lost weight on them are attached.

The fitness centers employ only non-professionals who dream and see how to disfigure your knees, shoulder joints and overload your poor body so that your immunity “falls”. Yeah, but only professionals work in journalism who are absolutely sure that 3 hours a week in the gym weakens the immune system, and shoulders and knees fall off by default. Also, all the women are fools, the men are goats, the jocks are stupid, and the Japanese are otaku.

If you have anorexia, then you can be looked at like an animal in a zoo. Moreover, if you have a medical education, you are, by default, a well-mannered person. Even if you ask a girl all over the country if she is on her period, and loudly declare that “actually, it’s not for you to judge your attractiveness.”

In general, in the muddy stream of programs “about losing weight” there is a very lack of an adequate wave. One that at least tells you how you can eat normally and lose weight, and doesn’t talk about “superfoods” and “don’t eat after three.” Yes, I'm a bore, but I believe that television should serve public health, and not show a set of harmful cliches.

Documentaries

"Thin and Thick"

Documentary film, dir. Elena Pogrebizhskaya, Russia, 2017

Perhaps, so far, the only domestic documentary film that professionally covers the problems of eating disorders. The film shows the real stories of two heroines. One suffers from anorexia, and the other from overeating. There are also comments from specialists working with eating disorders.

There are many emotional moments that allow you to better understand all the pain that people suffering from eating disorder go through.

“Thin” (“Thin/Thin”)

Documentary film, dir. Lauren Greenfield, USA, 2006

The film tells the story of real girls who experienced eating disorders and ended up in a private clinic specializing in helping such people.

It’s interesting that the film also shows the girls’ everyday lives, thanks to which you can see how a person with a serious eating disorder thinks, speaks, thinks, and communicates. But fragments of group and individual psychotherapy, interaction of staff with parents, with each other, etc. are also shown.

And, of course, the film's particularly dramatic ending, which makes you understand why eating disorders can be so difficult in terms of treatment and remission.

"Extreme Transformation: Weight Loss Program"

The program has been broadcast since 2011. Six seasons have now been released. The host is coach Chriss Powell. The transmission script is the same every time. A person, whose weight is usually 150 kg or more, addresses the letter to the presenter. Then Chris Powell flies to him and begins rescuing the hero. An overweight man is sent for a medical examination, while the show's team is working on converting the hero's home into a gym.

For three months, the participant receives an assignment from the presenter to lose 40-70 kilograms of weight. Three months later, a new goal appears. After nine months, the hero gets rid of excess weight, and then his sagging skin as a result of weight loss is surgically tightened. A year later we can see the same person in a completely new form, and this transformation is truly shocking.

"Those who have lost the most weight"

It was in this program that our favorite Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper acted as coaches.

Two teams of fat participants are recruited. For a certain time, they train, eat right and perform various tasks. Control weigh-ins take place regularly, according to the results of which the person who lost the least weight leaves the project. At first, the competition takes place between teams, but then each participant fights only for himself, regularly studying with a coach.

Each week, the two people who have lost the least amount of weight go home. In the USA this show is extremely popular. It has been published since 2004, and for many fat people it has become a salvation and an opportunity to regain not only external attractiveness, but also physical health. There are also versions of the program in other countries - Great Britain, Australia, Russia, Ukraine. The Russian version is called “Weighted People”, the Ukrainian version is called “Weighted and Happy”.

"Two centners of love"

The American show “Two Centners of Love” has been airing since 2011. It was hosted by actress Sarah Rue, who in the past was fat herself and had to put in a lot of effort to regain her normal shape. In this show, she tries to pass on her experience to other fat people.

Nine overweight couples in love who naturally want to lose weight are selected to participate. The weight of most participants exceeds the 100 kilogram level. Sara Ryu herself, as well as professional fitness trainers, help them fight excess weight. For three months, couples actively train and follow a diet. And the couple who managed their excess weight the best will receive a surprise at the end of the project in the form of a luxurious wedding.

"I was fat"

American show that started in 2010. The heroines of this project were high school students suffering from excess weight, who really want to lose weight and are ready to switch to proper nutrition and exercise to achieve this. Each 60-minute episode tells the story of a girl who conquered excess weight. Before this, trainers, nutritionists, doctors and other specialists work with them for three months.

Most girls weigh more than 100 kilograms before the project, and then lose weight to completely normal parameters. The show follows them during their three months of summer break between high school and college, and each episode ends with them starting school in a new location. A lot of tears and sweat are shed, but then each of the participants can proudly and boldly say the phrase “I WAS fat.”

Nutrition program

The fitness training program can be used by anyone. It includes the following:

  • 15 minutes of running on a treadmill with a heart rate of no more than 140 beats per minute.
  • 10 minutes warm-up for joints.
  • Half an hour of strength training, which will include repeating familiar exercises and mastering new ones. Strength training includes exercises for the buttocks and legs, working the back muscles, exercises for the chest muscles and abdominal exercises. The exercises are performed in 3-4 sets of 12-20 times.

Participants are offered four or five meals a day. You can choose one of the proposed options.

Breakfast:

  • Oat flakes in water without sugar with the addition of fruit.
  • Low-fat cottage cheese with berries.
  • Cheesecakes made from low fat cottage cheese.

Dinner:

  • White meat chicken with a side dish of buckwheat or stewed vegetables.
  • Steamed turkey or chicken cutlets with a side dish of stewed vegetables.

Dinner:

  • Seafood with vegetables.
  • Chicken fillet with vegetables.
  • Vegetable salad dressed with olive oil and lemon juice.

Between main meals, you can snack on egg whites, a small amount of low-fat cottage cheese, a vegetable salad or a green apple.

Weight loss shows may not provide a one-size-fits-all recipe for how to lose those extra pounds, but you can learn a lot from them. They are also great at motivating by showing stories of people who have lost huge amounts of weight. And in comparison with them, our couple of extra pounds seem like mere trifles.

Films-lectures

"The history of tasty and healthy food"

Lecture, author Stanislav Drobyshevsky, 2022

Lecture by a remarkable scientist, anthropologist, candidate of biological sciences, associate professor of the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Biology, Moscow State University. M. V. Lomonosov, scientific editor of the portal Anthropogenesis.ru.

Of course, the lecture does not talk about eating disorders as such.

But there is a lot of valuable, and what is important - scientifically proven - information about how the evolution of nutrition and attitudes towards food took place among our ancestors.

This knowledge helps to destroy many myths and stereotypes that are propagated by the modern nutrition and weight loss industry. In particular, stereotypes about separate diets, the dangers of proteins, the indigestibility of certain foods, etc.

And in this sense, the lecture, it seems to me, has great psychotherapeutic potential, because it allows you to correct many irrational attitudes about nutrition. Or at least think about their ambiguity.

"The power of family against the power of anorexia"

Documentary film about modern treatment of anorexia. The authors of Parents-to-Parents are a non-profit organization.

This short film tells about one of the modern and so far the most effective method of psychotherapy for adolescent anorexia. About family-based therapy (FBT or Family based therapy). They are told by both specialists who directly work in this direction, as well as parents, and the teenagers themselves. Therefore, in some places it turns out very emotional and dramatic.

To watch the Russian translation, you need to enable subtitles in the video settings.

"Doctor for fat people"

Gear cycle, dir. Rebecca Gilhooly. Electric Sky Productions LTD. UK, 2007

This is a series of programs where people with morbid obesity and very high weight are shown (usually from 150-200 kg). And although all the programs talk about surgery as a panacea for weight loss, this is not what makes the film so valuable. And because it allows you to see the way of thinking and actions of people for whom the relationship with food has become completely confusing and complex. And they were practically put in a wheelchair.

Through the monologues and dialogues of the program's characters, you can see a lot of psychological factors that influenced eating disorders and such extreme weight gain.

As for resection or gastric ballooning, of course, this is not a panacea. And it has nothing to do with psychotherapy. Although in some cases it may be the only radical way to quickly reduce extremely high weight, so as not to die from another serious disease.
