Jintropin is available in bottles filled with dry lyophilized somatotropin powder for injection. Since 2005, an aqueous solution has been available (Jintropin® rhGH Liquid Formulation in cartridges).[4]
The drug is produced by genetic engineering: the somatotropin gene is introduced into the DNA of Escherichia coli bacteria, as a result of which these bacteria begin to synthesize full-fledged growth hormone.
By structure, Jintropin is a peptide consisting of 191 amino acids and has a molecular weight of 22,125 Da. The amino acid sequence of the drug is identical to the amino acid sequence of human growth hormone produced by the pituitary gland.[5]
Jintropin is intended for use only in China, because... not approved for sale or import into the United States [6]. Since the beginning of 2007, GeneScience has officially stated on its website that it does not supply Jintropin to other countries, [7], but the United States accuses the company of smuggling the drug [8]. And in September 2007, US federal authorities charged GeneScience and its CEO, Lei Jin, with smuggling.

Yes, that’s right: “Jintropin” was created as part of the state program for the development of the pharmaceutical industry; China needed its own high-quality synthetic growth hormone.
At the very beginning of 1996, the company Gene Science Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd (abbreviated as GenSci) was founded in the Middle Kingdom, 50 percent of the shares belonged to Li Jin, and 50 percent to the state. In September of the following year, the installation of equipment was completed, and three months later the first samples of the drugs Jintropin and Scimax. By this time, in terms of its capacity, GenSci was considered the largest pharmaceutical company in China producing synthetic growth hormone.
At first, all Jintropin produced was purchased by the state. But the company developed, orders appeared from private hospitals and pharmacies, and GenSci’s production potential gradually began to exceed government needs. In 2002, Jintropin already owned two-thirds of the domestic market for synthetic growth hormone, and it began to be considered the number 1 pharmaceutical brand in China. And two years later, new capacities were put into operation, which made it possible to annually produce up to 5 million vials of various drugs. Finally, in 2005, a liquid form of Jintropin (in the form of a pen) was released onto the market.
Ban 2006-2011[edit | edit code]
GenSci's production potential gradually began to exceed the needs of the state. The company began to expand the market and Jintropin went on sale to pharmacological distributors within the country. Which slowly began to distribute “Jintropin” throughout the world. The relatively low price and high quality of the drug quickly made it popular; “Jintropin” became especially popular in the USA, where it was used not only by ordinary citizens, but also by show business “stars” who wanted to push back the threshold of aging, tone aging muscles or get rid of excess fat under the skin. And at the beginning of 2007, video footage spread around the world showing Sylvester Stallone trying to smuggle “Jintropin” into this country illegally in his luggage on the day of the presentation in Australia of his film “Rocky Balboa” (“Rocky 6”).
In the end, the number of “Jintropin” detained in air and sea ports, and postal parcels exceeded all conceivable and unimaginable volumes. Doping scandals with the seizure of Jintropin from the defendants have become the most frequent news in sports and sports circles. The patience of the US authorities ran out, and in 2007 they accused Li Jin, who had been the head of GenSci all these years, of organizing a network of suppliers involved in the illegal export of Jintropin to the United States. At one time there was even a question about Lee Jin's extradition to the United States.
Under these conditions, the GenSci company was forced to completely curtail production - the state suspended the license for the production of Jintropin and withdrew the GMP certificate. And since the beginning of 2008 - in connection with the Olympic Games in Beijing - synthetic somatotropin preparations were included in the list of specially controlled substances, which resulted in the cessation of sales of these drugs in the pharmacy chain. Please note: from early 2007 until mid-2010, GenSci did not produce Jintropin at all. That is, all the drugs that hit the market at that time were exclusively counterfeit.
In 2011, production of Jintropin was resumed, but GenSci learned that lesson very well. The procedure for dispensing the drug has been seriously tightened. Now, for delivery to their country, it can only be purchased by official distributors, who must have a license to officially sell Jintropin, that is, the drug must undergo official registration and certification.
