Fitness bikini: categories of participants, conditions for participation in competitions, history of occurrence and rules of conduct

Bodybuilding for women has long ceased to be something unusual. More and more often, girls strive not only to lose weight, but to acquire an athletic and fit figure, which cannot be achieved only through diet.

However, the impressive muscle volumes of performing and often masculine female athletes still alarm girls in pursuit of pumped up forms. And sometimes they force you to give up going to the gym altogether.

Today we’ll tell you why female bodybuilding is not at all scary, what it is, and when it comes to competitions, what categories it is divided into.

Bodybuilding federations and categories

There are several federations of competitive bodybuilding: IFBB (International Federation), NABBA (National Amateur Bodybuilding Association), WABBA (World Amateur Bodybuilding Association), WFF (World Fitness Association), NAC (International National Athletic Committee).

The categories and rules of participation in these federations may differ slightly, so we will consider the Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness of Russia (FBFR).

So, in our federation there are the following main categories:

1) Men's:

  • classic bodybuilding
  • Men's Physique

2) Women's:

  • female bodybuilding (Women's Physique)
  • fitness
  • body fitness
  • fitness bikini
  • fitness model

In addition, there is women's fitness (girls aged 8-16 years), bodybuilding (boys under 12 years old and young men), masters (women over 35 years old, men over 40 years old), mixed pairs.

Let's look at the features of each category separately.

Classic bodybuilding

  • The division into categories is carried out by height and weight (the maximum weight is calculated according to the formula and prescribed by the IFBB rules)
  • Well-balanced, proportionally developed body
  • Sufficiently developed musculature of all muscles, separation of muscle fibers - distinct dryness
  • They usually perform in black swimming trunks.
  • There are mandatory poses

Men's physicist (beach bodybuilding)

Pumped up “tanned” (read: made up) handsome men in bright colored shorts. Perhaps every girl's dream.

What are the specifics of this category?

  • The muscles of the shoulder girdle, back, pectoral muscles, and abs are more developed in athletes.
  • Smaller muscle volumes, unlike classic bodybuilding
  • A thin waist is welcome
  • They perform in bright beach shorts and choose colors based on their own wishes.
  • Men's physicist can be recognized by his fashionable hairstyle, as if he had just left a barber shop
  • No mandatory poses, free posing
  • Characterized by naturalness and relief (but not absolute dryness)

Bikinist training[edit | edit code]

Bikinists do not need too big muscles, so most often they choose intensive training and circuit training. They also need to burn subcutaneous fat, so much attention is paid to cardio exercise. Large weights are usually ignored, preference is given to high-repetition training.

The greatest attention is paid to nutrition. Bikinists monitor their diet year-round and eat very little carbohydrate foods.

Fitness bikinis are on the rise. This is exactly the kind of sport where it is important to have a healthy, strong, beautiful body, and there is no need to spoil your health with some kind of pharmacology or doping. For example, there is absolutely no need to inject yourself with testosterone, as in female bodybuilding.

Despite its popularity, it is a very competitive sport. To make it to the stars, you will have to work very hard and deny yourself delicious food for years. Fitness bikinist training program

  • Fitness training: program for a beginner[edit | edit code]

Everyone should have their own training program, previously agreed upon with an experienced instructor. However, you need to know a basic set of exercises, the total time of which should not exceed a maximum of one and a half hours. Any workout should begin with a warm-up, the purpose of which is to prepare the joints for stress and increase the heart rate. And most importantly, you should not be afraid of iron heavier than two kilograms. The idea that using heavy dumbbells will lead to increased muscle mass and a change in figure remains a myth. The fact is that, unlike men, the level of the hormone testosterone, which is responsible for increasing muscle volume, is much lower in women. Accordingly, each fitness training for women will be accompanied by increased endurance, decreased subcutaneous fat and the formation of a beautiful figure.

    Fitness bikini program

    includes:

    • the first day we pay attention to the shoulders: we perform dumbbell rows in front of us while standing, dumbbell presses at an angle of 90 degrees, dumbbell raises at an angle, and barbell rows to the chest;
    • second day - back and biceps: standing dumbbell rows, lever rows, medium and wide grip block behind the head, seated barbell lifts from the knees, biceps curls;
    • third day - chest and shoulders: dumbbell press at an angle, barbell and dumbbell bench press, dumbbell fly, standing dumbbell press;
    • fourth day – training for legs: squats with a barbell, leg press, bending and extending legs in a machine, bending with a barbell while standing;
    • fifth day - back and triceps: upper block in front of you to the chest, horizontal block to the chest, block behind the head, French press.

Fitness bikini nutrition: what's the secret[edit | edit code]

Before you start dieting, you need to assess the ratio of body weight and fat percentage, and then decide on your fitness goals for bikini or extra pounds. A balanced diet consists of the following ratio of macronutrients: a little more protein than carbohydrates and a little more carbohydrates than fat.

It is important to eat up to 7 times a day in small, even portions throughout the day. For example, if the daily caloric intake is 2000 kcal, then each meal should not exceed 330 kcal.

On a note! You should not sharply reduce the calorie content of your diet. This will lead to a decrease in muscle mass.

Beware of alcohol and salad dressings. They contain a huge amount of calories. Also, some of them are capable of causing chemical reactions that retain water in the body. The fitness bikini is designed to prove that an athletic female body can be sexy and beautiful. It should be remembered that without the discipline of training and a balanced diet, it is impossible to build the body of your dreams.

    Women's Physique

    • The main criterion is large muscle volumes and relief (lean body).
    • As a rule, female athletes are forced to resort to pharmacological support (anabolic steroids), since building the body necessary for this category is impossible due to insufficient testosterone production and natural hormonal levels in women.
    • Due to the low percentage of fat and the increased concentration of male sex hormones, atrophy of the mammary glands often occurs (this is why many participants have breast implants, which does not contradict the IFBB rules).

    Fitness

    • Athletes in this category have smaller muscle volumes compared to the previous category
    • High demands on body contour
    • In addition to posing, a free program (gymnastics or dance) is mandatory, which also allows you to evaluate the athlete’s plasticity and grace

I especially liked Oksana Grishina’s program at the Arnold Classic in 2016, where she took first place.

    Appearance

Fitness bikini is an event for which it is necessary to prepare not only the body, but also the appearance. According to the rules of the competition, special makeup must be applied to the body, which helps highlight the relief of the muscles.

You cannot use products that quickly wear off and stain everything around. Glitter, rhinestone and gold red are also prohibited. Make-up material must be purchased at specialized sports stores.

When applying makeup, you need to focus on the lighting in the hall. The color and density of the coating will depend on this. Sometimes makeup is supplemented with oil to highlight specific areas.

When assembling an image, it is necessary to take into account that all the details must be combined with each other. Therefore, you should not overload your appearance with a large number of accessories.

    Makeup

There are no special requirements or restrictions regarding hairstyle and makeup. It is necessary to focus on naturalness and try to complement the overall image. Due to a specific diet, your skin may not change for the better before a competition.

The face may suffer from dehydration that a regular moisturizer will not hide. In this case, you can use a silicone-based makeup base. This component covers the skin, evening out the tone and hiding all flaking.

When covering your body with brown makeup, you should not apply it to your face, especially if the girl is light-skinned and blonde. This technique will look very unnatural. The main task is to create a smooth border between the body and face. To do this, you can use foundations in dark shades.

Almost all models have distinct facial features, in particular cheekbones and a nose. To emphasize these parts, use a dark corrector. Eyebrows also play an important role. They should be corrected and given a shape that suits the facial features. Be sure to make the eyebrows symmetrical and also deepen the color so that they are visible from the stage. To do this, use shadows, pencil or fondant.

The eyes are painted brightly so that they stand out against the background of the dark body. There are no restrictions on makeup, so you can use any technique. Some contestants choose shades to match the color of their swimsuit. False eyelashes highlight your eyes well.

When choosing a shade of lipstick, you should pay attention to the following shades: red, burgundy, raspberry, coral, fuchsia. A bright accent will give a girl’s appearance a memorable look.

    Swimwear

The participant has the right to decide where to buy her swimsuit. Some sew it to order, but it is very expensive and not everyone can afford to work with a seamstress. You can find a ready-made swimsuit in a store or on the Internet, or borrow it from a friend of the participant.

It is necessary to select clothes so that they fit perfectly on the body and emphasize the advantages of the participant. The fabric should not cover muscle areas or hinder movement.

The bodice should be tight, but without much push-up, so the cup should be selected carefully. Too large will unsightly move away from the body, and a small one will compress the chest and will not allow you to properly evaluate the figure.

The requirements for swimming trunks are even stricter. Thongs are strictly prohibited. The fabric at the back should cover at least 1/3 of the buttocks. To make the swimming trunks look more aesthetically pleasing, they have a vertical gather in the center. The fit of the panties is high, there should be no deep cutouts.

Typically, swimsuits are made from thin stripes on the back and hips. The best fabric is supplex. Sportswear is often made from this material. The color range is very wide, but it is better to avoid too bright acidic shades

It is important to consider your skin type, as well as the lighting in the room. High-heeled shoes are used as footwear

    Fitness bikini

    • Feminine figure
    • Harmoniously developed muscle groups
    • Distinctive features: the “standard” are rounded buttocks, flat stomach, thin waist (and the thinner it is, the better)
    • The chosen image (hairstyle, makeup, jewelry) is of great importance; as for the swimsuit, the athlete is given a huge choice. Basic requirements: the bottom should cover 2/3 of the buttocks. The bodice usually has a large push-up to beautifully highlight the bust
    • Particular attention is paid to presentation - smoothness of gait, graceful hand movements, gaze, transitions between poses and, of course, self-confidence, charisma and energy with which the athlete performs (by the way, and not only in the bikini category). It often happens that the form may leave much to be desired, but thanks to charisma and correct presentation, the athlete will be rated by the judges with a higher score.

    Many, often, almost unlimited

A separate topic for each athlete is nutrition. There is an opinion that those who train professionally are on a strict diet. And getting up from it is a terrible sin, for which the coach will punish. But Larisa Zamyshlyaeva is sure that sports (professional and amateur) are incompatible only with sweets. Although there is one “magical” day when you can afford everything, even wash down your cake with cola. It's called a cheat meal.

    Reference

A cheat meal is a planned diet violation. From a physiological point of view, a planned intake of high-calorie food shakes up a stagnant metabolism in a new way. Morally and emotionally, this deviation from the rules satisfies the psychological need to indulge in something forbidden.

    Larisa Zamyshlyaeva, personal bodybuilding trainer:

However, if people who are far from sports simply need a healthy diet for everyday life, professionals need supplements due to their high energy consumption and accelerated metabolism. Only legal and useful. They are, of course, not cheap and are not sold in every store.

    Prices for sports nutrition

A can of high-quality protein can cost 5 thousand rubles. It will last for about a month and a half if you don’t drink the cocktail every day. Amino acids - 3 thousand rubles for the same period. Vitamins - 2-3 thousand rubles.

Larisa herself, recalling her diet during preparation for the competition, laughs: “I ate a lot. Very. Every three hours. Sometimes it was necessary to eat 400 grams of ready-made buckwheat per day. And everything else."

    Fitness - model

    • The newest category, introduced only in 2016
    • Closest to the fitness bikini category
    • A distinctive feature is the fashion show in a one-piece swimsuit and long evening dresses.
    • The harmony of the image as a whole, the attractiveness and charm of the athlete, and her presentation are also assessed.

    Let's sum it up

Despite these different categories, the following common features can be identified:

    • the form most suitable for this category
    • image
    • presentation, self-confidence
    • the energy and mood with which the athlete goes on stage - all this is “felt” by the judges
    • posing, knowledge of the features of your form (know how best to “turn”, how to give the most advantageous look to your muscles, etc.)

Taken together, all these points (+personal sympathies of the judges, despite the objective evaluation criteria) determine the final place of the athlete when participating in certain competitions.

Where to learn to pose and practice poses: is it worth hiring a coach?

The clear answer is in front of the mirror! You can (and should) study at home. But practicing alone is good for remembering the technical aspects of your performance. You definitely need to practice the poses and walks:

    • in front of a mirror • in crowded places, in public • in the gym • in front of acquaintances and friends

    Go and watch:

Fitness bikini: girls before and after

Speaking in public will be beneficial. They will help you overcome stage fright, stiffness and tightness, and anxiety. It is useful to record your performances on video so that, together with the coach or yourself, you can see your shortcomings and mistakes and work on them. And just to understand what the performance looks like from the outside, what impression it makes.

It is also useful to study videos from bikini fitness competitions to see which of the participants looks better and understand for yourself what the judges note positively.

    Women's bodybuilding

The first women's bodybuilding competitions began in the 1960s with competitions such as Miss Physique and Miss Americana. However, these early competitions were actually not much different from ordinary beauty pageants.

In modern women's bodybuilding, there are the following competitive categories:

    • Women's Physique (female physique),
    • Women Fitness (women's fitness),
    • Women Bodyfitness (women's body fitness),
    • Women's Bikini-Fitness (fitness bikini),
    • Fitness Model (fitness model.

and at that time there was only one competitive category, Women Bodybuilding.

In 1978, the first US National Bodybuilding Championship took place in Ohio, where, unlike beauty contests, they began to evaluate the muscles of the participants.

Rachel McLeish, Lisa Lyon, Stacey Bentley, Kiki Elomaa.

In 1980, the competition was won by Rachel McLeish, who had excellent muscles, but retained her femininity without muscle hypertrophy.

Until about 1986, this trend continued - women remained women. Among the best representatives of this period, along with Rachel McLeish, are Lisa Lyon, Stacey Bentley, Kiki Elomaa.

In subsequent years, muscle hypertrophy began to dominate female bodybuilding. Female athletes began to pay more attention to building muscle mass like male bodybuilders.

Corey Everson, Lenda Murray, Iris Kyle, Kim Czyzewski.

In this regard, in 2013, the Women Bodybuilding category was renamed Women's Physique in order to emphasize a harmonious physique rather than overdeveloped muscles.

    Women's Physique (female physique).

The category has existed since 2013. In competitions, preference began to be given to more attractive girls, without obvious masculine features.

    Category Women's Physique (female physique)

Women's Physique includes 2 height categories: height up to 163 cm, height above 163 cm. In this category, participants must have well-developed muscles and a V-shaped figure (wide shoulders and narrow hips), but at the same time maintain femininity.

    Women Fitness (women's fitness).

This category of female bodybuilding is one of the stages of the movement from masculinity to femininity. Participants must have an athletic appearance, the muscles are not massive, but well developed. In addition, participants demonstrate the capabilities of the body in dance or gymnastic movements.

In women's fitness competitions, there are two height categories:

up to 163 cm; over 163 cm.

There are two more categories at IFBB International Competitions:

    juniors under 23 years old – up to 163cm; juniors under 23 years old – over 163cm;

    Women Bodyfitness (women's body fitness).

It has existed since 2002. Here all attention is paid to the proportional and harmonious development of the body.

In women's body fitness competitions, there are three height categories:

up to 163 cm; up to 168 cm; over 168 cm.

There are four more categories at IFBB International Competitions:

up to 158cm; juniors under 23 years old – up to 163cm; juniors under 23 years old – over 163cm; veterans over 35 years of age are an absolute category.

Participants in the body fitness category usually have a slightly more muscular, toned and athletic body type compared to bikini fitness figures.

    Women's Bikini-Fitness (fitness bikini).

The category has existed since 2011. Another logical stage in the movement towards natural femininity.

    Women's bodybuilding categories

All competitions related to the visual representation of the physical development of the body in women, regardless of the federation, are divided into three divisions: bodybuilding, fitness and body fitness.

    Fitness

The goal of women's fitness competitions is to have an athletic appearance, judges look at the figure from different angles. This is the only category in which participants demonstrate flexibility, elasticity and technique of dance movements.

To show off their sporting achievements, all girls can submit an application to participate in the competition in the “fitness” category. As part of this discipline, participants demonstrate different poses over several rounds and perform exercises from an aerobic, dance or gymnastics program.

Participants in the fitness category are visually attractive and have virtually no masculine features. Many female athletes have breast implants. The volume of muscle mass is usually small, but high definition (including six-pack abs) and muscle separation are required. The peculiarity of the category is that it is necessary to present a gymnastics program or dance.

There are two height categories in women's fitness competitions:

There are also categories at IFBB International Competitions:

    • Unioki under 23 years old – up to 163cm;
    • Juniors under 23 years old – over 163cm;

    Fitness bikini

Fitness Bikini category includes women with very thin physiques. Judges are looking for a softer look than in other categories (they are not looking for the same muscle mass in the fitness category)

Participants in sports competitions in the Bikini category have a strong, lean physique and at the same time natural feminine curves. Women who compete in this category have a slightly higher percentage of body fat (approximately 12-14%) compared to other athletes and do not have pronounced blood vessels on their skin. An important assessment factor for participants in “bikini fitness” is a flat, sculpted stomach. The abdominal muscles should be visible, but not too clearly.

There are three height categories in Fitness Bikini competitions:

At IFBB International Competitions there is also a height category: up to 158 cm.

There are also categories at IFBB International Competitions:

    • Juniors under 23 years old – up to 163 cm; (not younger than 16 years old)
    • Juniors under 23 years old – over 163 cm; (not younger than 16 years old)

Fitness bikini is considered the lowest grade category introduced by the IFBB in 2011. Athletes should have an attractive appearance and a beautiful figure, but without obvious muscle relief (rounded buttocks, flat stomach, narrow hips).

The low reputation of the fitness bikini division is explained by the fact that almost any girl can achieve such a physical shape with regular strength training and diet, and many girls have suitable shapes by nature. Therefore, most of the titles of fitness bikini champions were obtained through bribing judges or other services for which many FBFR champions became famous.

    Women's Physique

Participants in Women's Physics (formerly Women's Bodybuilding) had huge muscle volumes and pronounced definition. As a result of the use of high doses of anabolic steroids, as a rule, all participants showed pronounced symptoms of masculinization, including a rough voice, atrophy of the mammary glands (almost all had implants), clitoral hypertrophy, masculine facial features, etc. Most female athletes experience thinning hair on their heads and even experience male pattern baldness.

Criteria and requirements for fitness bikinists: what judges look at

Of course, bikini fitness is a competition that evaluates your body and posing skills. But you need to remember that it is like a kind of beauty contest, so the judges evaluate your image as a whole. It is worth noting that since this is a relatively young type of competition, the requirements for it often change. That is why you should constantly monitor this information about the requirements on the official competition websites of your country/city/region. However, certain stable trends and laws have already emerged in the evaluation of fitness bikinists. Their list is presented below.

    — Relief

When preparing your body for participation in a competition, you need to remember that your goal is not flashy relief, clearly defined abs, but the right balance between a well-trained body and femininity. Muscles in this competition should emphasize feminine forms, and not attract attention as, for example, in bodybuilding.

What will serve you as a huge plus and help bring victory is a clear separation of the buttocks from the hamstrings, with one horizontal line. It looks quite impressive, and all the judges pay attention to it. The second is to separate the hamstrings by one vertical line from the quadriceps. A fitness bikinist should give the impression of a graceful girl with a toned figure who adheres to a healthy lifestyle.

    — Skin, makeup, hairstyle

The skin should speak about the health of the participant. Elasticity, lack of rashes, healthy glow, tan - all this is welcome. Participants resort to using various artificial tanning products. However, any bronzers/tanning sprays/glitters and other non-professional cosmetics that may smudge/smudge/leave marks are prohibited.

The exception is products applied at least 24 hours before the competition, as well as professional, salon tanning cosmetics. Easily washable makeup is also allowed. The use of oils and moisturizers is acceptable, but only in moderation. Of the artificial things, only breast implants are allowed.

The hairstyle is styled at the discretion of the participant.

    — Gait

The gait should be light, relaxed but not slack, slightly playful. When driving, you need to remember about the gluteal muscles so that they are tense, do not relax them. The pelvis must be slightly pulled back at all times for this.

    — Image and mood

You need to remember that in addition to your physical shape, relief and proportions, your overall image is assessed. An integral part of it is your outfit (the requirements for clothing are described below), as well as the mood and emotions emitted by you, which are felt by the audience and judges. The face is bright, expressive, with a smile. Friendliness, natural charm and a playful look are very much appreciated and will bring you closer to winning.

    - Cloth

The swimsuit cannot be transparent; it must necessarily consist of two separate parts. One-piece swimsuits are not allowed. Just as thongs are not allowed, the lower part of the swimsuit must cover at least one third of the buttocks. Regarding color, texture, patterns and ornaments, the number of rhinestones or other decoration elements, participants can rely on their taste and preferences.

The same rules apply when choosing shoes. It is only stipulated that these cannot be shoes with a platform, the stiletto heel should not be higher than 12 cm, and the thickness of the sole should not exceed 1 cm. Speaking of jewelry, earrings, bracelets and a wedding ring are allowed.
