Body fat percentage - how to find out? Tables for men and women

Determining your body fat percentage is an important part of cutting or gaining muscle mass. Although the norm is around 15% for men and 20% for women, athletes strive for a value below 10% - in this case, the abdominal relief becomes especially noticeable.

In turn, during a weight gain cycle, it is important to monitor the increase in the percentage of body fat on a weekly basis - adjusting your diet and workouts if necessary. How to calculate this indicator and is it possible to find it out using ordinary scales?

Caliper[edit | edit code]

Measuring subcutaneous fat with an individual caliper

Caliper

- a device for measuring the thickness of the skin fold. The method, calipometry, is based on the assumption that the increase in subcutaneous adipose tissue is proportional to the increase in the total amount of fat in the body. Measurement accuracy within 3.5-4%[1][2]

The caliper is effective only for people whose body mass index ranges from 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m2.[3], since most models have restrictions on the width of the skin fold between the jaws of the device from 6 to 8 cm.[4]

Calipometry, a scientifically developed method, has long been known and has proven itself as a simple, accurate and cheap way to determine the percentage of body fat.[5][6] However, to assess the risk of obesity, it is necessary to take into account body mass index, the amount of fluid in the body (toilet), also possible diseases, type of physical activity, race, etc.[7]

Other ways to determine body fat content:

[10][11]

  • Underwater weighing method;
  • X-ray examination (Double X-ray absorption DEXA);
  • Bioimpedance method.

At what points should measurements be taken?

Triceps (back of shoulder):

The point is located exactly halfway between the shoulder and elbow joints. The fold is taken in a vertical direction directly at the center of the back of the shoulder.

Biceps ( front of shoulder ):

It is measured in the same way as the triceps, only in this case the crease is taken at the front of the shoulder.

Spatula:

Just below the shoulder blade. The fold is taken at an angle of 45 degrees, as shown in the figure.

Waist:

Just above the ilium and pelvic bone. The fold is taken almost horizontally, as shown in the figure.

Ideal weight formula[edit | edit code]

There is no universal formula that can tell you whether you are overweight or not, and the only way to determine your “ideal weight” is to compare the amount of body fat to your total weight.

An indicator called body fat percentage reflects how much of your total body weight is fat tissue. Knowing the number, you can easily assess your degree of obesity or “leanness.”

There is no single figure for everyone showing the ideal amount of fat in the body, since much depends on gender and age.

Calculation method[edit | edit code]

Table of fat content for men Table of fat content for women
Method of calculating body weight.

1. Determine your current body fat percentage based on your gender. To do this, measure the skinfold thickness with a caliper, and using the table included with the caliper, find the fat percentage value at the intersection of age and skinfold thickness.

Measurement area for men:

[12]

  • Breast
  • Stomach
  • Hip

Measurement area for women:

[13]

  • Triceps
  • Iliac region
  • Hip

Let's say your body weight is 80 kg and your body fat percentage, determined using the caliper and the accompanying table, is 30%.

This means that the fat mass is 24 kg, and the available fat-free mass is 56 kg.

You decide that you will aim for 22% fat content. This ratio is scientifically based and is considered ideal, since the body needs a certain amount of fat.

The target lean mass at this ratio would be 78% (100%-22%).

2. To obtain your target ideal body weight, divide your current lean mass in kilograms by your target percentage lean mass and multiply by 100.

56/78*100=71.8 kg.

So, you should aim for a body weight of around 72 kg and lose 8 kg to maintain muscle mass and achieve your ideal body fat content.

Measuring Tips[edit | edit code]

  • Measure the crease on the right side of the body
  • Do not use the caliper in areas with damaged or diseased skin.
  • To capture the fold correctly and without difficulty, do it on dry skin, without creams and lotions.
  • In obese people, the preferred method of determining body fat is to measure circumferences with a metric tape.
  • Do not take measurements after physical activity or bathing, as the skin fold may increase due to the accumulation of fluid under the skin.
  • Women should not take measurements during their period due to the usual weight gain during this period.
  • To obtain correct body composition results, take measurements at the same time of day and using the same caliper.
  • To grasp the same fold with your fingers, a little experience is required. The first time you measure, practice until you get the same results.[14]

The value of subcutaneous fat

Subcutaneous fat is a type of biological fat located between the muscles and the skin. It is formed as a result of a sedentary lifestyle, which is aggravated by poor nutrition (especially an excess of animal fats and fast carbohydrates).

Subcutaneous fat is located under the upper epidermal layers. Its main function in the body is to regulate energy balance. 1 g of subcutaneous fat contains 9 kcal. If the body does not have enough calories, it begins to consume them from fat cells, burning them and at the same time reducing fat content. This not only releases energy, but also allows internal organs and body parts to function normally. This fat reserve allows a person to survive for a long time under conditions of intense exercise and/or hunger strike.

Places where fat accumulates

Subcutaneous fat protects internal organs from the negative effects of a negative environment on them. So, it softens injuries during falls, impacts or exposure to high temperatures. If there is a sufficient level of fat, it is possible to ensure the mobility of the skin, which helps prevent its ruptures and other damage. The next function of subcutaneous fat is thermal insulation. Fat protects the human body from hypothermia.

Note! Seals, whales and other warm-blooded marine animals that live in cold regions have a dense and thick layer of subcutaneous fat.

Fat under the skin acts as a substance that produces hormones. Most often, adipose tissue synthesizes leptin and estrogens. In fat cells, reserve nutrients are accumulated and stored. The main ones are A, D, E and other fat-soluble vitamins. Female sex hormones – estrogens – are also located here. If a guy has an excess amount of adipose tissue in his body, his testosterone levels decrease, which activates a clearer manifestation of feminine traits.

Classification[edit | edit code]

There are many types of calipers on the market that vary greatly in price, quality, accuracy, reliability, ease of use. Below are some types of calipers.[15]

PhotoNameDescription

Caliper CescorfSimilar design to the Harpenden caliper, made in Brazil. Measurement error within 0.1 mm, the ability to measure skin folds up to 88 mm.

Criticism[edit | edit code]

  • The measurement accuracy is within 3.5-4%. The 20% calculation may actually mean a body fat percentage of 16 to 24%. [25][26]
  • Some calipers calculate the percentage of fat to tenths, although it is obvious that the accuracy of body fat using 3 indicators on different parts of the body cannot be correctly calculated. Even hydrostatic weighing allows you to obtain results with an accuracy of 2-3%.
  • There are more than a hundred equations and formulas for calculating. Each formula applies to different types of people with different characteristics. In young people, for example, about half of their fat is under the skin. And as our bodies age, most of our fat is stored inside the body (visceral fat). If the size of the skin folds of people of different heights is the same, then their fat percentage will still differ significantly. Obviously, there are more differences than just age: gender, fitness level, the amount of total body fat a person has—all matter. Hence 100 formulas. There is no equation, nor has there ever been one written just for you - so you will never get truly accurate results. The table given above is considered generalized for average men and women.[27][28]

The human body requires a certain amount of fat to function properly, conserve energy, and protect vital organs. Triglycerides, cholesterol and other essential fatty acids that the body receives from outside act as messengers and enable protein to do its job. They are responsible for chemical reactions that help control growth, immune function, reproduction and other aspects of basic metabolism.

It is important to control the body's fat balance to avoid adverse consequences.
