How did you get started in bodybuilding?

I have been involved in sports all my life - horse riding, gymnastics and athletics. As a child, I couldn’t sit still - I either ran along the street or played games with friends. I started training 2-3 years ago, quite intensively. Both then and now I am focused on results. When I found out about the upcoming fitness competition, I decided to take part in it, because this is what I have always dreamed of. And I ended up in first place!

After such a huge achievement, I realized that all my hard work was not in vain.

early years

Stephanie “Steph” Davis was born on November 4, 1973 in Illinois, and spent her childhood in New Jersey and Columbia (Maryland). Her parents: her father Virgil was an aeronautical engineer, and her mother Connie was a school teacher. In an interview, Stephanie herself recalls herself as a child who was not keen on sports, but excelled in studies and music. Beginning at the age of 3, Davis studied piano using the Shinichi Suzuki method. By the age of 18, she devoted 6 hours to music lessons every day, in addition to this she sang and played the flute. In the documentary “A Perfect Circle,” Davis says that it was through her 15 years of piano practice that she learned “discipline” and “how to project something.”

In 1990, Stephanie entered the English Department at the University of Maryland. Already in the spring of 1991, at the suggestion of a classmate, Davis tried her hand at rock climbing for the first time, and by her own admission, she fell in love with this sport forever. Since her new hobby brought her much more emotional strength, she firmly decided to complete her musical studies. During the holidays, Steph climbed Longs Peak and also bouldered at Hueco Tanks. Since then, Davis has found it difficult to “want to do anything else.” In her interviews, she also says that “from the very first days, climbing was a difficult challenge, and that’s probably why I was so passionate about it.”

During this period, Stephanie Davis enjoyed rock climbing so much that she moved to Colorado, where she was an exchange student at Colorado State University for a year. After receiving her bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, she attended the University of Colorado to pursue a master's degree. Her thesis topic focused on exploring the canon of mountaineering literature and “how reality is variable and inconsistent for those living in extreme circumstances.” Refusing to obtain a doctorate, Davis entered State University Law School, but in September 1995 she interrupted her studies there after only 5 days. Against the wishes of her parents, she decided to continue climbing, devoting her life to it.

Where do you get your inspiration?

My motivation is other fitness models such as India Paulino, Ashley Kaltwasser and Lindsay Renee. Their achievements are truly inspiring and I hope that one day I too will reach the same level. What also helps me in this regard is positive thinking. It was thanks to positive thinking that I achieved what I wanted much faster.

Life is too short to chase dreams!

From modeling to fitness

The second life-changing moment occurred in her mid- 20s when she discovered the magic of strength training and literally fell in love with it. She especially liked how quickly her body changed thanks to the exercises. She turned her effort and diligence into success immediately after several months of training and diet. She entered her first fitness competition and won it. Further successes were not long in coming.

Rock climbing

For 7 years after Davis graduated from college, she lived out of her car and traveled to various climbing areas. Throughout her adventures, she read Gabriel García Márquez's novels, Kirstie Alley's autobiography, and French short stories. According to her personal confession, some of her favorite authors are T.S. Boyle, Victor Villaseñor and Rumi. Among her climbing heroes is Layton Core.

Stephanie Davis's parents did not approve of her lifestyle and her passion for rock climbing, which made her often feel lonely. But everything changed when she became more famous and successful in the sport, and was able to earn a better living, especially thanks to sponsorships from large companies (Patagonia, Five Ten, Clif Bar, Black Diamond).

Personal life

In the fall of 1994, while Davis was climbing Longs Peak, she met Dean Potter, who had dropped out of the University of New Hampshire and was living in a car, devoting all his time and energy to climbing. Despite the fact that Stephanie was absolutely not interested in starting a serious relationship, Dean managed to insist on his own. In an interview, Davis describes this period of his life as “constant fireworks and drama.” Both of them were in search of sponsors, and lived together or separately alternately in their cars.

In 1995, Davis and Potter moved to Moab, Utah, to, in their words, acquire “a library card and a locker.” Having converted the mobile home into a regular cottage, they often traveled to Yosemite National Park, where they planned to build a house in the future.

In 1998, the Patagonia clothing brand signed Davis to become its first female rock climbing ambassador. This is how Steph was able to finally prove to her parents that she could earn money by playing her favorite sport. Despite separating in 2001, Dean Potter proposed to Stephanie Davis, and they married in June 2002 in the La Sal Mountain Valley. In her numerous interviews, the athlete admits that they never had a generally accepted traditional relationship, although they were married. They were rarely in the same place at the same time due to their climbing projects.

Stephanie Davis is also known for being a vegan activist and practicing yoga since 2006.

In 2006, their marriage collapsed following Potter's controversial ascension to Delicate Arch, as the couple lost sponsorship and financial stability, respectively. In May 2015, Dean Potter died in a BASE jumping and wingsuiting accident.

In 2011, Stephanie married base jumper Mario Richard. After the ceremony, they jumped off the mesa and parachuted back to earth. Together they formed the company “Moab Base Adventures”, which organizes jumps, hikes and trips. Richard died while wingsuiting in August 2013. In 2018, Davis married Ian Mitchard, a skydiving instructor, BASE jumper and wingsuiter.

Further achievements in rock climbing

The year 2002 was marked for the girl with the first major achievement in her life. She has conquered the seven peaks of the Fitzroy Range between Argentina and Chile. Interestingly, she became the first female representative to conquer all its peaks at once.

In 2004, Davis set a goal to free climb Mount El Capitan. To do this, the girl had to train a lot and constantly work out the entire 38-meter path. As a result, in 4 days she completely climbed the entire El Capitan route and became the first woman in history to do it by free climbing. In May of the same year, the girl climbed the route again, but in one day, becoming the second female climber to do so.

In 2005, the girl continued to conquer Mount El Capitan in California and this time took on the Salathé route. The route was approximately 980 meters. The girl walked this route and conquered the Salathé wall freely: while climbing, Stephanie used only her arms and legs. To achieve her goal, she worked for a long time, working out every centimeter of the future path. Due to force majeure, the ascent was delayed for 11 days, but Davis did it.

The girl is also one of the most experienced free-solo climbers. This means she is a free climber: she does not use any protective equipment to reach peaks other than her own hands and feet.

In addition to rock climbing, Davis participated in various expeditions in Pakistan, Italy, Kyrgyzstan and other countries.

In 2007, Davis began skydiving. Due to the lack of permitted places for parachute jumping, the girl began to practice BASE jumping.
