According to the IPF/FPR Rules, competitions are held in powerlifting and classic powerlifting, bench press and classic bench press, bench press among athletes with a disability, among universities. Separate competitions for squat and deadlift are not held (there is only a draw for small medals by counting them from triathlon at the European and World Championships). There is a 1 year suspension for participation in alternative competitions. There is a lot of controversy about this, but it is what it is. There is no longer a lifetime ban (repealed in 2008), also, if you previously competed as an alternative and FIRST decided to compete under the IPF/FPR Rules, then you are allowed to compete in the official federation WITHOUT suspension. What is powerlifting?

At the beginning of the 20th century, strength gymnastics originated in Russia. Dr. Kraevsky's athletic club promoted simple truths:

  • a man must be strong and strong, no matter what he does;
  • Weight training allows anyone to become strong;
  • You need to exercise regularly and according to plan, perform squats, deadlifts and presses.

But in the first half of the 20th century, only weightlifting developed. Weightlifters squatted, bench pressed and standing, performed deadlifts with different grips, and biceps curls to become stronger. They competed with each other in these movements behind the scenes. Over time, squats, deadlifts and presses have become popular among regular gym goers. The first unofficial US championship in these three movements was held in 1964. And in 1972, the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) was created.

Since then, competitions have been held according to modern rules:

  1. Athletes are divided into weight categories.
  2. Men and women compete separately.
  3. Three attempts are given to complete each exercise.
  4. The tournament begins with the squat, then the press, and the deadlift finishes everything off.
  5. Exercises are performed according to certain rules. The squat begins at the judge's command. The athlete must reach the depth of the squat, at which the pelvic bones are below the knee joint, and stand up. In the bench press, according to the rules of different federations, there are either three (start, press, racks) or two commands (press and racks), but everywhere you need to touch the chest with the bar and press only on command. In the deadlift, you need to raise the weight and wait for the judge’s command, only then lower it.
  6. Approaches not done on command, with double movements and technical errors (under-squatting in a squat, lifting the pelvis off the bench in a press, under-extended shoulders and unstraightened knees in a deadlift) are not counted.
  7. The winner is determined by the sum of three exercises in each weight category and in the absolute standings. To calculate weights in absolute terms, the coefficients used are Wilks, Glossbrenner or the new coefficient used in IPF.

Powerlifting is a non-Olympic sport . The Paralympic program includes only the bench press, but all federations hold World Championships, where the strongest athletes gather.

In Russia there is a system of youth sports schools, where powerlifting sections operate and boys and girls train. Adult athletes train with commercial trainers and pay for their own training.

AWPC Standards: Deadlift

The straps of the suit must be worn over the athlete's shoulders during all exercises in competition. Velcro straps are allowed. The suit can be any color, plain or multi-colored. The suit must have trouser legs that, when fully put on, should not come into contact with the knee bandages, or “cover” the knee joints completely or partially. Women are permitted to wear a one-piece leotard that matches the required costume design. Leotards with sleeves or high-cut legs (like a swimsuit) are prohibited. Platform

All exercises must be performed on a platform measuring at least 2.46m x 2.46m (8 x 8 ft). The surface must be durable, non-slip and completely flat in the part where the competitive exercises are carried out. Difference between AWPC and WPC

As you already understood from the text above, the main differences between AWPC and WPC are the presence of doping control in one of the organizations and the different “stringency” of standards. That is, a novice weightlifter will hardly be able to achieve any significant results if he gets into the WPC competition, because only professional powerlifters who have been involved in this sport for many years, and often do not deny themselves various kinds of chemistry, participate in them.

With the competitions held by the AWPC, things are different. AWPC standards can be achieved by an athlete who has been involved in powerlifting for 2-3 years and has an aptitude for this sport.
