Running gives you energy and gives your body healthy activity. But this can also lead to injury if the load is not adjusted and if you do not run in unsportsmanlike or improperly fitted shoes. Consequences: inflammation of the Achilles tendon, sprains, knee pain, corns and blue toenails. A big misconception among new runners is that amateurs can run in “regular” running shoes. If you run regularly and still dream of running a marathon, you need to be smart about your shoe selection. This will avoid chronic injuries and reluctance to continue running. Our rating presents the best sneakers for men and women.
How to choose good running shoes?
Professional athletes select running shoes based on the runner’s weight, running technique, level of training, and the presence of chronic diseases of the musculoskeletal system and joints. These nuances are very important, but make it difficult for beginners to choose. Just try on the sneakers and run around the sales floor in them a little. If your leg is tight or rubbing somewhere, move on to another model. The slightest discomfort is a sign of refusal.
Another important selection criterion is the biometric characteristics of the runner’s foot. In a specialized store, a consultant can determine the type of pronation on a treadmill using a mobile video camera. There are three types: elevated, neutral and flat feet. According to seasoned marathon runners, there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all running shoe. But what over 80% of runners have chosen is likely to work for you.
Here are general guidelines to consider when choosing your ideal pair on your own:
- if there have been injuries in the past, when choosing sneakers you need to focus on the degree of fixation of the foot;
- marathons are intended only for athletes with good training and correct technique - such sneakers are not recommended for beginners;
- half marathons are suitable for all long-distance beginners: they have optimal shock absorption and good foot support, the sole is quite thick and moderately hard;
- There are no running shoes that are equally suitable for the gym, running on asphalt and rough terrain: unless you want to buy 3 pairs of shoes at the same time, allow yourself to be guided by the surface on which you run more often.
- Sneakers for men and women differ not only in color and not only in size range: women’s feet are narrow and have a higher instep, so the lasts will also differ for the same models.
- if you weigh above average, sneakers need to be stiffer and heavier - this is due to wear resistance and shock absorption;
- for running short distances and at a high pace, choose lightweight, highly cushioned and soft running shoes - this is necessary for quick acceleration and saving energy;
We've selected the 3 best running shoes for each surface. Models in the categories of men's and women's sneakers differ in that the same model meets the requirements of representatives of one or another gender to varying degrees.
Which sports sneakers are best to buy?
Before purchasing, you should carefully inspect your favorite pair of sports shoes. But before you go to the store, you should stock up on knowledge about the features of the materials and design of sneakers.
The upper part can be made of different materials:
- leather,
- leatherette,
- textile,
- canvas,
- any combination of the listed materials.
Leather, which is more durable and holds its shape well, is inferior to textiles in terms of breathability and weight. In general, the top not only serves an aesthetic and functional purpose, but also serves to maintain proper heat exchange and helps avoid the greenhouse effect. This means that denser materials are needed in the off-season, while in summer it is better to give preference to breathable fabrics and models with mesh.
The sole is usually divided into intermediate and lower parts, as well as a tread. Their purpose: to improve grip on the road surface, provide foot stability and optimal shock absorption. It all depends on the sport you play. If maximum cushioning is important for basketball players, volleyball players and other “jumpers”, then a distinctive tread is more important for running or race walking.
Fixation system. This can be symmetrical or asymmetrical lacing, Velcro, zipper, or elastic bands. Preference should be given to one system or another depending on the model, its purpose, the age of the athlete, and individual anatomical features.
For children under 4-5 years old, it is preferable to choose shoes with Velcro. Preschoolers and first-graders should already be taught to lace up - regardless of what sport they play.
Adults have their own rules. Most people focus on lace-up models, but weightlifters, basketball players, skaters and representatives of some other sports opt for combined Velcro+lace-up options. Sneakers with zippers or elastic bands are great for street walking, hiking, and golf.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 20
The Adrenaline is a long-time popular Brooks model that combines moderate support and cushioning. These are soft, supportive running shoes that provide exceptional comfort, flexibility and durability. Perfect for everyday and recovery workouts.
The Adrenaline 20 continues a trend in the running shoe industry toward softer running shoes and innovative methods to reduce overpronation.
The Adrenaline GTS 20 midsole features a combination of BioMoGo DNA and DNA LOFT foams, proven in the previous version. The midsole features responsive and durable BioMogo DNA foam; DNA LOFT material covers the heel area and combines DNA foam, air (makes it softer and lighter) and rubber (makes it more resilient) in its structure to create an ultra-light and durable shock-absorbing cushion. Technologically, the transition between the two types of foams is now smoother.
"Holistic" is Brooks' term for the support provided by the latest version of Guide Rails. This technology helps protect the athlete's knees by preventing unnecessary movement. Guide Rails, located on both sides of the midfoot and heel area, act like stops on a bowling alley: as the foot attempts to move from side to side, the bumpers guide the foot back toward the middle of the shoe, where step becomes the most effective.
The new streamlined upper is made from lightweight mesh with asymmetrical 3D prints and hugs the foot securely, providing structure and fit without excess bulk. The fit is typical Brooks, with a tighter fit in the heel and arch, and more width in the forefoot.
The heel outsole is made from an abrasive material, while the rest of the outsole is made from softer, more responsive rubber.
Adrenaline GTS 20 will allow you to run as much as your heart desires! And you don’t have to worry about your running safety: these sneakers will provide the best protection and shock absorption.

The outsole is made of durable foam rubber that covers the entire outsole for maximum traction. Brooks' proprietary Transition Zone outsole technology uses an X-shape in the midsole and a chevron tread pattern under the forefoot to optimize heel-to-toe transition and provide quick stride changes.
Flex grooves on the outsole allow your feet to move through a full range of motion without any restrictions, even during intense running.

What do you need to know about the sports shoe industry to choose the right sneakers?
This industry is huge, and the Russian market in this segment offers an impressive number of options available to everyone: cheap and expensive, for different purposes, from different collections, high or low rise, made of leather or synthetics.
The best companies producing sports shoes for men
Of course, there are many such manufacturers. Everyone knows these most famous transnational companies: Adidas, Nike, Reebok, Puma, Asics, New Balance and several others. Their collections are supplied to most brand stores around the world.
You should understand the range of these companies in order to better navigate this industry.
Adidas
Adidas is a German industrial company that has been in operation since July 1925. Its creator, Adolf Dassler, gave the name to the concern after the first three letters of his first and last name. Now Adidas is a leader in the market of sporting goods and services. The concern has its own, somewhat branched structure. Adidas production areas are divided into three basic groups.
- Adidas Sport Performance.
In this direction, products are produced exclusively for training, equipped with the advanced technologies of this company, using innovations, and the production of “smart things” is also launched: watches, fitness bracelets and others.
- Adidas Sport Heritage (Originals).
In this line of production, Adidas does not present its latest innovative developments for training and sports. We produce items that relate to everyday casual style. The main emphasis is on fashion trends, and not on new technologies. This direction has been operating since 2001, although before that there were different prerequisites for its creation.
- Adidas Sport Style (now Adidas NEO).
This line of production of the Adidas company is characterized by the fact that it contains all the fruits of cooperation between the German concern and leading, famous designers in the fashion world. It has been operating since 2002, but in 2007 Adidas Originals and Adidas Sport Style merged, but the logos of the two different directions are still present on sportswear and shoes.
For example, the American singer and actress Selena Marie Gomez several years ago became the designer of her own clothing collection, StellaSport. A special place in this direction is occupied by the Adidas SLVR collection, the main concept of which is convenience, simplicity and practicality - casual style.
No matter how strange it may be, the most popular Adidas production lines among the general public are Adidas Originals. This is where fashionistas and teenagers find the perfect things for themselves. However, Adidas NEO and Adidas Performance are also not slowing down, remaining the same relevant areas of production as they were a decade ago.
Nike
Nike is an American brand founded in 1964 by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight. Experts and business analysts have repeatedly hailed Nike as the most valuable brand in the sporting goods and services industry. This company is also the largest sponsor of many matches in various sports. A few years ago in Moscow, Nike became a sponsor of a free sports race - the #RUNMSK marathon, where more than a million people took part.
Just like Adidas, Nike has its own division of activities, as well as its own subsidiaries.
- Nike Golf is a line of sportswear and shoes created specifically for golf, taking into account all the features of this sport;
- Nike Pro is a line of sportswear and footwear created using Nike's own innovations and technologies, aimed primarily at athletes and sports team equipment;
- Nike+ is a line of sportswear and footwear designed to allow professional athletes to transmit data on heart rate, kilometers traveled or temperature to their iPod/IPhone using special sensors built into these sports products. Nike+ products are popular among Western professional and even amateur athletes;
- Air Jordan is a line of basketball apparel and footwear inspired by the success story of former NBA player Michael Jordan. For some time, this basketball player was the designer of this collection. There are also some LeBron products designed by the legendary James LeBron.
Interesting fact: according to statistics, 95% of basketball shoes in the United States are made by Nike's subsidiary Air Jordan. The remaining 5% comes from Adidas Top Ten and other manufacturing companies.
- Nike Skateboarding is a special collection of sports shoes created for skaters. The appearance of these sneakers is developed by famous Western designers. Shoes are produced with the prefix Zoom, implying attention to all details.
- Converse All Stars is a subsidiary of Nike, which has long produced legendary canvas sneakers with a distinctive lettering on the back and a white/black toe. Many people don't even realize that Converse is somehow connected to Nike.
- Cole Haan is a company founded in the 1930s that produces formal shoes, formal shoes, and formal suits and shirts. It is a subsidiary of Nike.
- Hurley International is a subsidiary of Nike that produces its own line of athletic apparel and footwear. Hurley International's logo is the letter X, which resembles the zodiac sign Pisces.
The two companies described above, Cole Haan and Hurley International, are not as widespread in Russia as they are in the United States and Western Europe. The Russian market has a wide range of sports goods from Nike, Converse, and Air Jordan.
Puma
Puma is a German industrial concern that specializes in the production of sports equipment, clothing and footwear. It is noteworthy that Adidas' competitor was created by Adolf Dassler's brother Rudolf Dassler. However, in real life their competition was not visible, and the two companies existed in peace with each other. Unlike the wide range of activities of Adidas and Nike, Puma is not involved, for example, in organizing friendly matches or Moscow races.
Interesting fact: despite the fact that the Puma company and the industrial concern Adidas never competed, two manufacturers were founded precisely as a result of a quarrel between two brothers, Adolf and Rudolf Dassler. It was this event that served as a turning point in the history of the sports industry.
Of course, Puma is not as widespread on the Russian market as, for example, Nike and Adidas. However, in 2016, Puma became a participant in one of the most striking collaborations in the sports industry: with the American singer Rihanna. The result was very bright, extravagant sporting goods that have earned recognition around the world.
ASICS
A Japanese corporation that produces sportswear and footwear. It started in 1949. The idea behind its creation was to support Japanese youth in the post-war years and inspire the nation. It was then that the Onitsuka Tiger company appeared. Today, the fashion direction of the brand is being developed under this name.
The brand received its modern name in 1977.
Interesting: ASICS is an abbreviation of a phrase in Latin, which when translated into Russian sounds familiar: “A healthy mind in a healthy body.”
Today ASICS is one of the five largest manufacturers of sportswear and footwear. The assortment includes sneakers for different sports areas.
Reebok
Founded in Massachusetts in 1958, the company is today a subsidiary of Adidas.
Interesting! The history of the company can be considered much earlier, since the founder of the family business, which the brand was originally, and an ardent running fan produced the first studded shoes in 1895.
The company began mass production of clothing and footwear for various sports after its merger with Adidas in 1985.
